5 Ways to Help Your Child Feel Less Stressed

5 Ways to Help Your Child Feel Less Stressed

Stress is a normal part of everyday life; it all depends on how we tackle it. The difficulty kicks in when stress tips over to distress and starts creating a negative impact on our day-to-day life, especially with young students who stop achieving, relaxing, or communicating- that’s when they need your support!?

Being a parent, here are 5 ways you can help your upset child:

  1. Kids require a safe space to express their emotions. It is important to check in with your kids regularly. This will help them feel comfortable sharing things with you themselves when they are feeling overwhelmed. A quick "how was your day at school today?" or “did something interesting happen today?” can go a long way.?
  2. Is your child feeling swamped with the workload? The transition between school levels can be hard. Make sure your child knows that you care about their well-being first and schoolwork second. Encourage your child to develop the habit of keeping a planner where they can plan due dates, tests, and assignments.?

Another tip: break schoolwork into chunks. Allow your youngster to concentrate on completing one part of the task with a set timer and focused study time. Then give them a break before coming back later to the task. One step at a time!?

3. Does your child have too much energy? Start with a dedicated pre-study active play or combine learning with outdoor play times in between. This way, you can help your attention-challenged child stay more focused while doing their assignments or preparing for tests.?

4. Every child is different, having different emotional needs. After a long day at school, some children need some alone time before being ready to take up new challenges. Introduce your child to new activities that can help them discover their hobbies and interests. These may be knitting, reading, music, drawing, painting, or any other available activities that allow them to spend some time alone. Screen time does not count here!?

Remember, good nutrition and adequate rest are basic needs of a child that can help them stay more focused during challenging study sessions!?

5. Does your kid seem to be struggling with motivation? Have they given up? Help your child understand that there are more important things in life than just grades- like learning! Your child always has the next semester to start afresh in the grade book. Find a topic in the subject where your child feels confident, for example, the human body in science or multiplication in math. Intrinsic learning might be able to improve their final grade but exerting too much pressure on them for lifting up their grades will not!?

As a parent, it is easy to identify the physical needs of your child, but their emotional needs may not be so obvious. However, good mental health is their way to develop socially and perform to their full potential.
