5 Ways to Find Joy at Work as a Millennial

Millennials are yesterday's retirees. There was a time when in many parts of the world 60 or 65 was considered retirement age in many professions. Today, this is 50, and constantly getting lower. For some, this may be great. For many, it's bad news.

Multiple factors are at work here. Accelerating technology at the workplace, either as AI or robotics, has caused a few major shifts. First, many skills have become redundant or insufficient, especially when they are repetitive. Second, many jobs have become redundant, either due to process changes or automation. Together, this has had a catastrophic effect on the size and structure of workforces, blue or white or any other color collar.

That said, there are areas in which human skills are still important, and perhaps more critical than ever before. In building relationships and communication, evoking awareness, motivating and inspiring people, and creating and innovating, human skills with sensory, emotional, and spiritual intelligence will remain relevant and crucial. These human skills also equip us with essential survival tools as entrepreneurs to innovate, pivot, create, and take decisive action.

Here are 5 fundamental human skills you need to master for workplace happiness:

1. Embrace Purpose?

Why??

Neuroscience shows that a sense of purpose activates the brain's reward centers, releasing dopamine and serotonin. This enhances our cognitive function, creativity, and resilience.?

How? Identify your core strengths and what brings you joy. Then align your work and life around these fundamental values. Consider entrepreneurship if traditional employment doesn't fulfill your purpose.?

What? Start journaling about moments that bring you joy and work that feels meaningful. Include well-being and relationships in your mission. This authentic purpose-finding process, similar to Ikigai, will help create your future vision. Remember: Focus on moving with velocity in the right direction rather than rushing with kneejerk reactions. Purpose-driven velocity is crucial for success.

2. Master Deep Work?

Why? Our brains excel at focused work, not multitasking. When we achieve flow through focus, we experience increased happiness, creativity, and productivity.?

How? Set aside distraction-free time blocks for deep work. Begin with 15-30 minute sessions and gradually increase the duration as your focus strengthens.?

What? Implement the Pomodoro Technique: 25-minute focused work periods followed by 5-minute breaks. Adjust these intervals to find your optimal flow state. Successful entrepreneurs swear by this method.

3. Build Authentic Relationships?

Why?

Strong social connections are fundamental to human survival and workplace success. They reduce stress, enhance collaboration, boost job satisfaction, and spark creativity.?

How? Practice active presence in conversations, demonstrating genuine curiosity and empathy. Teams built on trust consistently outperform others, regardless of individual talent levels.?

What? Challenge yourself to connect with one new person daily, maintaining a positive, appreciative attitude. Prioritize face-to-face interactions to build a genuine, powerful network. Remember, successful entrepreneurship thrives on authentic networking.

4. Master Rest & Innovation?

Why?

During rest, our brains consolidate memories, process emotions, and forge new connections. This restoration is crucial for maintaining creativity and productivity.?

How? Embrace various forms of rest – from quality night sleep to power naps and mindful meditation. Listen to your body's signals for breaks.?

What??

Implement rest rituals: take 10-minute breaks hourly for deep breathing, stretching, or calming music. This simple practice can double your energy, mood, and productivity.

5. Cultivate Flexibility?

Why? Our brain's neuroplasticity allows continuous growth. Developing adaptability helps us find creative solutions to workplace challenges.?

How?

Constantly expose yourself to new skills, diverse topics, and alternative approaches to familiar tasks. Practice generating multiple solutions instead of settling for the first idea.?

What? Take the 30-day challenge: Step outside your comfort zone daily, whether it's trying a new work approach or learning a new skill. This builds crucial entrepreneurial adaptability.
