5 ways for creative generalists to build clear boundaries

My life - like all of our lives - is jam-packed. We’ve got work, events, friends, family, the gym, partners, everything. Right now, I’m getting back home from traveling…again. It’s a good thing I’m an expert at building boundaries on a plane - with others and with myself. I get cozy in my seat, crack open my laptop, put on my noise-canceling headphones, and make sure to spend those hours flying doing something productive.?

I’m not saying this is what you should do. This is simply what I do so I can make sure I get my work done and can be present for whatever event or vacation I’m traveling to.?

I’m a type A, what can I say ??.

I’m also a creative generalist, so these boundaries are what help me thrive in all areas of my life. If I didn’t have clear boundaries, I would never be able to keep up with the schedule I have and do the things I love to do. I gathered my top five ways to build clear boundaries for any creative generalist:

  1. Have clear values. Knowing what your values are will help you to navigate situations where other people - with their own values, which are sometimes the extreme opposite of your own - are trying to force you to do something that doesn’t align. You don’t have to let other people’s values guide you. Discover what matters to you, and build boundaries to protect that.
  2. Know where you’re going. Entrepreneurs often talk about having a North Star, and while it can sound hokey, it’s important you find yours. Knowing where you’re going will help you reinforce your boundaries and help you articulate your plans to those who try to steer you elsewhere.
  3. Build strong opinions (a tough one for creative generalists!). You don’t have to accept everyone else’s opinions just because you’re good at seeing everyone else’s point. When you start to let their opinions infiltrate, it ends up diluting your own opinion. Stick to what you feel strongly about and don’t let anyone change your mind without your permission.
  4. On the subject of opinions, remember that the truth is a consensus. Instead of forsaking your own opinion for that of another, use whatever works for you as much, or as little, as necessary to evolve your own.
  5. Finally, creative generalists are bridge builders. We bring people, communities, and ideas from all over the world, together. This is a superpower! Acknowledge it to help people respect one another, for innovation to sprout, and for communities to flourish.?

When you have solid boundaries, you get to decide when, and if, the opinions of others affect you. That is pure power when you think about it. What will you do with your newfound superpowers? Hit reply and let me know! I think I’d learn how to fly…then I wouldn’t have to take so many airplanes!

With curiosity and courage,
