5 Ways to Create Logical Flow in Your Writing

As a writer, one skill you must master is the act of incorporating "logical flow" in your writing. This is because having a logical flow in your writing makes reading a lot easier for your readers, gets your readers hooked and interested in your article, and helps them navigate and understand your write-up with ease.

Logical flow entails a lot. It involves the apt use of transitional words, clear, concise wording and succinct phrasing, strong topic sentences to start a paragraph, logical connections between ideas, and changed wordings with sentence structure. Logical flow involves all parts of writing, which makes it difficult to implement and achieve.

Below are some ways you can incorporate logical flow in your writing.

Apt Use of Transitional Words

The use of transitional words in your writing helps connect paragraphs and sentences. It also guides your readers from one sentence to another, so that they won't be confused.

Transitional words can be thought of as bridges in your write-up that bring flow and consistency.

You can incorporate transitional words in your write-up through repetition of key terms or phrases between sentences.

Transitional words can be used under the following conditions.

  1. If you want to express agreement, reinforcement, or addition, you can use transitional words such as; "Also", "In addition", "Likewise", and "Additionally".
  2. If you want to express alternatives or contrarian evidence, you can use transitional words such as; "In contrast", "Instead", "However", and "Rather".
  3. If you want to present effects or consequences, you can use transitional words such as; "Thus", "Therefore", "Accordingly", and "Consequently".
  4. If you want to introduce examples or to emphasize the importance, you can use transitional words such as; "For example", "For instance", and "Such as"
  5. If you want to conclude, summarize or restate ideas, you can use transitional words such as; "In conclusion",? "In summary", "As shown", and "In short".

Using Clear, Concise Wording And Succinct Phrasing

Another way to ensure logical flow in your writings is through the use of concise words and succinct phrases because concise words are essential elements that help maintain logical flow.

As a writer, you must make it a point of duty, to always use clear and compact words in your writing.

The use of concise words and succinct phrases leads your readers straight to the point and keeps them hooked and interested in your write-up.

Below is an example showing the difference between the use of unambiguous words and the use of clear and concise words.

???????????????????? "Online school, it also means schooling online. Here, there is no physical contact with either teacher or fellow students, help students become a master of their area of specialization, which results in students showing leadership skills and receiving an award for their brilliant performance"

The above write-up could easily confuse your readers. Compare with the example below:

???????????????????? "Online school helps students become efficient in their specialization, which can bring about an award for their performance"

You can see that it is short, concise, and straight to the point.?

Using Topic Sentences

The first sentence in a paragraph is sometimes the topic sentence. It informs or alerts the reader on what to expect from that paragraph or passage.?

Due to its role in maintaining logical flow, topic sentence serves as informational signposts for readers.

As a writer, you should elucidate more on the topic sentence. This can be achieved by following up with sentences that explain the topic more.

Use of Logical Connections

Where most writers get it wrong in their write-up is coming up with ideas that do not make logical sense. In other words, the ideas don't match or fit together.

This interrupts the flow of reading and brings about confusion on the part of the readers.

If an idea doesn't flow well with other ideas in a write-up, it is your responsibility as the writer to take it out of the way so as not to hinder the progress of the reader.

Logical connections are the same as coherent connections. It is a way of tying ideas together.

Take for example; if I was writing an article on the advantages of an online school. Firstly, I will talk about the benefits it provides to people who reside in rural areas as well as those who are working-class citizens.

But if I go on to talk about how students can be engaged physically on campus, you will notice a disconnection of ideas as well as a deviation from the subject matter.

So in a nutshell, your ideas as a writer must match and make perfect sense to your reader.

Changed Wording and Sentence Structure

Repetition and reiteration of words hinder the flow of your write-up. And this also kills the interest of your readers.

As a writer, try as much as possible to avoid the repetition of words in your article. By doing this, you not only create flow but also maintain it.

Avoiding repetition gets your readers hooked and interested in your views and in the way you talk about your views.

Also, if you want your writings to be very interesting, then you should introduce variety in the way you structure your sentences.

You can introduce variety in your sentences using the following methods:

  1. ?Varying the types of sentences you use.
  2. Varying the sentence length.
  3. Varying the way a sentence begins.

Consider the following examples:

  • When she went to high school, Regina had poor grades but was very happy.
  • Regina went to high school, where she earned poor grades but was very happy.
  • Regina went to high school. Her grades were good, but she was very happy.

Conclusion

Having a perfectly logical flow in your writing is essential and critical to writing an exceptional article. So as you write, do not forget to use transitional words, clear, concise wording and succinct phrasings, topic sentence, logical connections, and changed wording with sentence structure. Once you gain mastery of these concepts, you will see yourself producing engaging content that your readers will Love.
