5 Ways to Build Confidence as a Leader

Confidence is an essential trait for any leader, as it not only helps in making decisions but also encourages team members to trust and follow their direction. However, confidence is not always an innate quality, and it may take some time and effort to develop.

Here are five ways to build confidence as a leader:

  1. Focus on your strengths: Instead of dwelling on your weaknesses, focus on your strengths and what you can do well. Identify your unique talents and skills and use them to your advantage.
  2. Set achievable goals: Set realistic goals for yourself and your team members. Accomplishing these goals can boost your confidence and motivate you to tackle bigger challenges.
  3. Seek feedback: Ask for feedback from your team members and colleagues. This can help you identify areas for improvement and build your confidence by knowing what you are doing well.
  4. Embrace failure: Instead of being afraid of failure, embrace it as an opportunity to learn and grow. Analyze what went wrong, and use this knowledge to improve your skills and decision-making abilities.
  5. Learn new skills: Continuously learning new skills and knowledge can help you build your confidence as a leader. Attend seminars, read books, or take courses to expand your knowledge base and develop new skills.

In conclusion, building confidence as a leader takes time and effort, but it is an essential trait that can help you succeed in your role. By focusing on your strengths, setting achievable goals, seeking feedback, embracing failure, and learning new skills, you can build your confidence and become a more effective leader.

If as a leader and you are not questioning your skills and abilities then you are probably screwing up. Especially if you have a team that has been doing what you're in charge of longer than you have. I have guys on my team that have been doing our job for 15 years, I can't compete with that. I have the confidence to ask "What do we have to do?" I also have the confidence to say "Yeah we can't do that but the other part of what you said we can do. Do That. Let me get permission for the rest." Our down stream leaders may have a clear picture of what needs to be done but up stream we need permission to proceed. Make sure that they know that and that you have their back for the decisions they made in the field and on the fly. Leading sux. I would rather do it myself. Unfortunately there is not enough "I" to go around. Set expectations. Praise in public. Council in private. Teach and educate every chance you get. Cut the dead wood as it is toxic. V/R Craig
