5 Ways To Become a Sustainable Event Superhero
Did you start out in the hospitality industry because you wanted to make the world a little brighter? I sure did. Seeing the smiles on attendees' faces has always been one of the most rewarding parts of the job. But the thing I'm most proud of about 360 Destination Group is that we empower our team to make our clients look like superheroes. So, what do you say? Let’s save the world one event at a time!
Most organizations have multi-year plans in place to achieve certain sustainability goals. If you can contribute to moving the needle in the right direction, you’ll be ironing that cape in no time. Making your event strategy greener may feel like a battle, however, there are plenty of small steps you can take that will make a big difference. Your budget and your leadership will thank you.
1. Serving Up Sustainability
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, at least 14 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year. Plastic is one of the biggest threats to our environment, especially our oceans. When it’s not possible to use china or linens, be sure to avoid single-use plastic and explore compostable options. But the food you’re serving is just as important. To cut down on the carbon emissions required to ship ingredients, partner with caterers who commit to using farm-to-table produce. Go the extra mile to support the local community by donating leftover food to a food bank or shelter. It’s a real one-two punch: good for the environment and the soul!
2. Go Green or Stay Home
Booking an eco-friendly venue is one of the easiest ways to ensure your event starts off on the right carbon footprint. In addition to asking about their LEED Certification, there are a few other factors to keep in mind. Try to plan offsites in locations that are easily accessible by public transportation or that offer on-site accommodations.?

3. Reusable Signage and Décor
Who isn’t on board with a chalkboard, am I right? There are plenty of chic (not kitschy!) ways to maximize on multi-use signage and styling. Reusable or digital-only signage is green in more ways than one – it avoids wasted materials and leaves more money in your budget. You can even work recycled materials into your décor. If you do use fresh florals, you can donate those, too!
4. Give Eco-Friendly Transportation the Green Light
Groups that ride together, thrive together. Afterall, getting to or from an event can be just as much of an experience as being there. For tech-savvy attendees, offer rideshare vouchers for download and encourage them to carpool. To get the party started early, curate a Spotify playlist that reflects the mood of your gathering.
5. Choose SWAG They Won’t Bag
Raise your hand if you’ve never thrown out swag after an event! ...I don’t see any hands going up. Let’s trash the garbage gifties no one wants and instead embrace eco-friendly options. Offer folks reusable drinkware or recycled tote bags with a packet of seeds inside. You can also get hyper personal and take the guesswork out of the equation. Create a QR code folks can scan to pick out their own free gift–delivered directly to their home. This also means fewer boxes to move before and after an event!
