5 Ways to Become a Better Writer
If you're reading this article, you are probably a writer. Or you want to improve your writing in some way.
Before you can improve, you'll have to make a few changes. These are strategies that I have used in the past year, strategies that have worked for me. Here are 5 ways to instantly become a better writer.
1) Write every day.
The only way to become better at something is to practice consistently. Show up when no one else does. Even when you lack inspiration, try to write something. Highly praised writers such as Stephen King and Neil Gaiman recommend getting into a daily writing routine. This way, you can sharpen your skills and get into a natural rhythm, or flow state.
Stop waiting for inspiration. The perfect time does not exist.
2) Pick a spot designated for writing.
Whether it's at your desk or in your local Starbucks, find a place that is conducive to writing. Think of your ideal writing space. Are you listening to the Beatles or 50 Cent? Are you wearing your lucky hat or sipping your chai latte? Whatever that looks like to you, get into your preferred writing environment.

3) Read as often as you can.
No one can improve as a writer unless they read--and read a lot. I even recommend reading texts that are outside your expertise or usual genre. Keep an open mind and allow yourself to be moved by words. I enjoy reading suspense novels, but every so often, I pick up a fantasy book such as Harry Potter or City of Bones. These stories get my imagination started.
4) Join a writing community.
Who said that you have to do this all alone? While writing is largely a solitary act, writing groups can help you form connections. Even LinkedIn has been a supportive platform, inspiring me to write. Talk with other writers about your struggles and how you'd like to improve. This can help you feel less isolated.
5) Accept feedback, but don't let it define you.
There will always be someone who doesn't like your work. Someone who might recommend that you do something else with your time. While you should listen to all feedback, both positive and negative, don't take it personally. More importantly, don't let it discourage you from writing altogether. Every piece has strengths and weaknesses. Use these points to grow and strengthen your skills.
These are five ways you can become a better writer almost instantly. I hope that this helped you.

2 年Elizabeth Laughlin - this was great! I love your suggestions. At work, I sometimes find that I have to take my laptop to another room or go outside so I can get a new perspective on what needs to be done. I can see that being necessary for writing too. My LI account was acting up yesterday and I think I missed your original post. Thankfully, someone shared it and it came through my feed this morning.

2 年Nice work, Elizabeth! I especially like your point about taking feedback. It’s good to get other perspectives without letting it define your work.
