5 Ways to Authentically Represent Your Identity as a Thought Leader

5 Ways to Authentically Represent Your Identity as a Thought Leader

As someone looking to establish themselves as an authority in their field, representing your true self is key to building an engaged following and community. But how can you thoughtfully incorporate your diverse identity and perspectives into your brand in an authentic way?

Here are 5 strategies for authentically representing who you are as an emerging thought leader to incorporate into your social branding strategy:

1. Share Your Story

Telling your unique backstory in interviews, social platforms and/or on your website helps others relate to your journey and see you as a real person beyond your expertise. Highlighting challenges you've faced and overcome along the way can inspire followers and build trust.

2. Curate Diverse Content

Show the range of your interests through content on topics outside your primary niche that relate to your values or identities. This shows more depth and builds rapport with audiences through a crossover impact strategy.

3. Discuss Related Issues

Don't shy away from respectfully addressing issues important to communities you belong to, so long as they align with your brand goals. Speaking up extends your credibility while remaining respectful of different views.

4. Feature Diverse Guests

Amplify underrepresented voices in your field by hosting guests from a variety of backgrounds on your podcast, summit or publications. This elevates new perspectives for your followers and adds some variety.

5. Show up Authentically Online

Let your true personality shine on social media, in your emails, and your website in a way that aligns with your professionalism. Not every post needs to be highly produced - relatable spontaneity can be engaging when done right.

The goal is showing a variety of perspectives beyond the dominant mainstream narratives in your industry. To be honest, people get bored and need unique voices to wake them up.

Here are some examples of diverse content you could curate for your audience as a thought leader:

  • Discussions on overlooked issues in your industry affecting marginalized groups.
  • Highlight Black, Indigenous, POC professionals making an impact in your space through their work.
  • Share content on topics like empowering women in leadership, overcoming barriers faced by LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs, etc.
  • Create a curated reading list featuring books, essays and research authored by diverse voices.
  • Spotlight minority-owned startups and social ventures solving important problems.
  • Interview founders discussing challenges of underrepresentation.
  • Stories and profiles of disabled professionals in mainstream magazines/publications.
  • Conversations around inclusive practices, diversity/cultural competency within your industry.
  • Discussions unpacking bias and lack of representation across background, gender, ability and more within professional communities.
  • Analysis of current events through a lens relevant to marginalized groups in your field.
  • Recommendations of podcasts, newsletters run by women, people of color centered around your niche topics.

By thoughtfully but unapologetically representing all facets of who you are, you'll better serve today's diversity-conscious audiences and multi-dimensional professionals on their own journeys. Staying true to your full self is the best path towards building trust across many communities.
