5 Ways AI Can Save Time & Money for the MEP Industry

MEP design is one of the most error-prone parts of the entire design process. After spending weeks of engineering time on the design, MEP subs find themselves spending many more weeks adapting the design, coordinating, and removing clashes. Using generative AI, computer-based design, and automation of processes will ensure a superior design, and increase certainty for all stakeholders.

(1) Shorten engineers’ design time

Leveraging generative AI and computing power to reduce entire design time to hours instead of weeks or months. Introducing automation into tasks that today are performed manually can dramatically improve processes efficiency and free up the engineers to the pressing issues.

(2) Cut down MEP-related RFIs

Request for Information (RFI), is a business process used in construction to request clarification about documents, drawings, specifications, or other project conditions. On average, the cost associated with a single RFI is $1080 and the reply time is between 6.4-10 days. Superior design provides clarity to all stakeholders and ensures a decline in MEP-related RFIs.

(3) Reduce Reworks

Reworks are any unplanned construction work that is required to be done as a direct result of mistakes or missteps that were taken on a project site or throughout the planning process. Up to 70% of all rework in construction can be traced back to engineering and design-related errors, and reducing the rework can cut productivity losses and increase profit margins by up to 6%.

(4) Minimize clash detection & coordination

Automating the design process helps create certainty and reduced the need for clash detection & coordination between trades as design superiority rises and coordination is done throughout the design. That helps save $1500 per clash (detected in the design phase) and speed up the commencement of works.

(5) Perform design engineering and make sustainable design accessible

Speeding up the design process, enables all stakeholders to perform value engineering - explore different design options and choose the design that is energy efficient or is preferable for materials saving. Moreover, this will reduce the cost of sustainable design and will make it accessible as a default.

It is clear that the construction industry is on a verge of an AI revolution, and MEP design and construction are no different. Stakeholders quickly adapting and embracing new tools and automation processes will prevail in the ever-competitive industry.

I find the concept of AI implementation in the construction industry and specifically in the MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) field truly fascinating and innovative. As a MEP Manager, I am constantly seeking ways to enhance our job processes by leveraging AI technology to achieve significant advancements. My curiosity regarding AI and its practical applications in the productive world, beyond the digital realm, is boundless. I am keenly interested in delving deeper into this subject matter and understanding how AI can be effectively utilized in MEP technology. Whether through direct involvement or indirect participation, I am eager to be a part of this transformative journey. My primary objective is to gain further knowledge and insights into the diverse applications of AI in the context of MEP. I sincerely hope to receive more information on this captivating topic and eagerly anticipate the opportunity to explore the extensive uses of AI in MEP technology.
