5 Ways of Adaptability | The Key to Survive In This VUCA Era

Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.” – Jim Rohn

As quoted by Jim Rohn above, I knew that I had to be adaptable and resilient to succeed in this VUCA Era in every place and situation where I belonged, especially when I moved to a new environment such as this very challenging program held by Bangkit Academy led by Google, Tokopedia, Gojek, & Traveloka .

Participating in this program, encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone. Having to adapt to a new environment, learning new knowledge in a completely new field for me with a non-IT background, and with a super fast-paced learning timeline. It was very challenging for me and of course, it was not easy.

However, as a wise man once said "Difficult does not mean impossible". So to survive in this program requires a strong desire, dedication, and determination to adapt and be resilient. Here, I would like to share how I apply the "5 ways of adaptability" that I got from the ILT Softskill 4 session delivered by Kak Ira Yuti in facing challenges based on my experience during the Bangkit 2023 program.

Ways of Interacting

To interact with other cohorts, fortunately, Bangkit has provided Discord channels to facilitate cohort interaction. I had to be proactive in reaching out to other cohorts which helped me to build relationships and feel more comfortable. I also adapted my communication style to be more concise and clear in my messages, as I knew that written communication was a key part of the program.

Ways of Achieving

One of the Bangkit program's goals is to develop cohorts' skills in their own learning paths such as Machine Learning, which requires significant effort and hard work. To achieve this goal, I had to adapt by being more focused and disciplined. I have set clear goals for myself, such as completing all the required coursework and achieving high grades on assessments on time.

Ways of Learning

We learn through online classes, self-paced learning, and capstone projects. I had to adapt by being more self-directed and proactive. I used to set a target to study for at least 8 hours a day by watching learning videos and taking notes on all important materials. I had to be willing to explore and seek out additional resources when needed.?

Ways of Working

To make it easier for me to work in this program. I utilize several existing tools such as Google Calendar and Notion to manage and prioritize activities or tasks that I must complete. Additionally, I am aware that I am more productive in learning if there's no bed near me, so I go to campus and study at the campus library to make my activities more productive and complete my learning progress on time.

Ways of Thinking

Developing a growth and adaptable mindset is crucial for success in this program, where we encounter various challenges and obstacles a bunch of times. To adapt to this aspect, I have learned to embrace a growth mindset, which allows me to view failures as opportunities for learning and growth rather than as reasons to give up or feel discouraged. I also adapted my thinking by being willing to take risks and try new approaches, even if they didn't always lead to success.?

In conclusion, adaptability is crucial for building resilience, as it allows individuals to adjust and thrive in changing and uncertain situations. It also enables individuals to identify and pursue new opportunities for growth and development, making it a key factor in building resilience and promoting personal growth and success.

Appreciate your decision in joining Bangkit since you are a non IT student. It is indeed challenging to step out from our comfort zone. But I agree with Jim Rohn, be confident that your life will get better after joining this program. Good luck!
