5 Ways of Adaptability I Learned by Joining Bangkit 2023
What is Adaptability?
Adaptability is the ability to learn flexibly and efficiently and to apply that knowledge across situations. In a constantly changing world, those who can adapt quickly and effectively are the ones who will succeed. Being able to pivot, adjust, and keep moving forward in the face of uncertainty and change is what separates successful people from those who struggle to keep up. Adaptability is not just a skill, but a mindset that allows individuals to be open to new ideas, new information, and new ways of looking at things.
"Adaptability is not about being the strongest, or the smartest, or even the most innovative. It's about being able to survive and thrive in a constantly changing world. Those who can adapt quickly and effectively are the ones who will succeed." - Steve Maraboli
Joining Bangkit Academy led by Google, Tokopedia, Gojek, & Traveloka as a machine learning cohort has been a remarkable experience for me. Through this program, I have gained new insights and learned valuable lessons on adaptability that I will carry with me throughout my career. Here are 5 ways of adaptability that I learned and gained from the Instructor-Led Training session with Kak Septi Fahmi Choirisa:
1. Ways of Interacting
This form of adaptability refers to the ability to communicate effectively and build relationships with others. To improve this form of adaptability and address the five issues mentioned in the picture above, I practice active listening, empathy, and effective communication skills.
Active listening involves paying attention to what the other person is saying, clarifying any misunderstandings, and giving feedback to ensure effective communication. Empathy involves putting oneself in the other person's shoes and understanding their perspective, which can help build stronger relationships. Effective communication skills include being clear, concise, and respectful in communications.
Improving these ways of interacting has several benefits, including building stronger relationships, improving teamwork and collaboration, and increasing the ability to influence others. By practicing active listening, empathy, and effective communication skills, I can improve my ability to interact positively and productively with others.
As participants of the Bangkit 2023 program, we come from different universities and regions, making us a diverse group. Improving the ways of interacting can help me build stronger relationships with my fellow participants, instructors, and mentors.
2. Ways of Achieving
This type of adaptability refers to the ability to set goals, plan, and execute tasks effectively. To improve this, I practice setting SMART goals, breaking tasks down into smaller, manageable parts, and prioritizing tasks based on importance and urgency.
Setting SMART goals involves making goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Breaking tasks down into smaller, manageable parts can make them less overwhelming and easier to accomplish. Prioritizing tasks based on importance and urgency ensures that I focus on the most important tasks first.
Improving this way of achieving has several benefits, including increased productivity, improved time management skills, and greater success in accomplishing goals. By practicing setting SMART goals, breaking tasks down, and prioritizing tasks, I enhance my ability to achieve my goals and succeed both personally and professionally.
In Bangkit 2023 program, improving this way of achieving help me effectively set and achieve my goals for the program. Personally, I use Notion for note-taking and project management, as well as Todoist for task management. By setting SMART goals, breaking tasks down, and prioritizing tasks, I can make progress towards my goals and achieve success in the program.
3. Ways of Learning
This type of adaptability refers to the ability to learn flexibly and efficiently and apply that knowledge across situations. To improve this adaptability, I practice active learning, seek feedback, and reflect on my experiences.
Active learning involves actively participating in the learning process, such as asking questions, participating in group discussions or projects, learning new skills, and applying new knowledge to real-world situations. Seeking feedback involves asking for constructive criticism from others and using that feedback to improve my learning. Reflecting on my experiences involves critically analyzing what I have learned and how I can apply that knowledge in the future.
The benefits of improving this way of learning include increased knowledge and skills, improved problem-solving abilities, and greater adaptability in a constantly changing world.
In Bangkit 2023 program, improving this way of learning help me gain the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the program and beyond. By practicing active learning, seeking feedback, and reflecting on my experiences, I can improve my ability to learn from my mistakes and apply new knowledge to real-world situations.
4. Ways of Working
Adaptability refers to the ability to work effectively in different situations and with different people. To improve this, I practice being flexible, adaptable, and collaborative.
Flexibility involves adapting to changing circumstances and working effectively in different environments. This includes being open to new ideas, willing to try new approaches, and working with different people. Adaptability involves responding to changing situations and adjusting my approach as needed. Collaboration involves working effectively in teams and communicating and collaborating with others.

- Developing a growth mindset: Instead of seeing challenges as setbacks, view them as opportunities for growth and learning. Embrace failure as a necessary part of the learning process.
- Thinking critically and creatively: Be willing to question assumptions and think outside the box. Consider different perspectives and approaches to a problem.
- Being open to new ideas and perspectives: Be willing to listen to others and consider their viewpoints. Seek out diverse perspectives and ideas to broaden my own thinking.
