We’re all drawn to the cannabis industry for different reasons. But it’s our ‘why’ that keeps us persevering. For Brittany Hallett, an EVP of Marketing from Florida, its about the challenge of a new industry and expanding access to the plant. Hear directly from Brittany below: WHAT’S YOUR PERSONAL “WHY” (YOUR PASSION) FOR WORKING IN CANNABIS? I've been in the cannabis industry for 10 years. When I first got the opportunity to join the industry, I was attracted to the opportunity to help pave a path for a brand new industry and way of doing business. I also felt that cannabis not only offered recreational enjoyment but medicinal benefits for people and was something I could feel good about helping to expand access too, and I was able to find a company where giving back to those medical communities was a core pillar of their culture. WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST SURPRISE(S) ABOUT WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY? I think something I didn't expect was how different individual state markets could be. You really need microplaybooks for each market you operate in because each state is in a different phase of its lifecycle as it comes to cannabis legalization and what the market looks like. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE INTERESTED IN A CAREER IN CANNABIS? The cannabis industry is a very entrepreneurial one—even 10 years in, there still isn't a defined roadmap, and it changes state to state. Being okay with the unknown and being excited to tackle problems is a must for someone in this industry. WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY, WHAT PERKS AND/OR RISKS DO YOU SEE? The industry has been a rollercoaster in a lot of senses of the word—while we've made some progress on the legalization and acceptance front, it's not always a forward path, and that can come with some frustrations. However, the people in the industry and passion within the space continue to build and remain strong, making it a really fun and dynamic industry to work in. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CANNABIS WORK COMMUNITY? HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER WORK ENVIRONMENTS YOU’VE KNOWN? Passionate and dynamic. Everyone is ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work for the greater good of the cannabis plant. #workingincannabis #cannabiscommunity #thatsmywhy

Does your company plan for succession? In his latest article, Mike Siebold, Managing Partner at FlowerHire, dives into the challenges cannabis executives face when it comes to preparing for the future of leadership, and?why succession planning needs to be a priority. ? At FlowerHire, we've seen that succession planning is not a top priority for most cannabis HR departments. But we've also seen how many companies would have greatly benefitted from giving succession planning some thought. It's one of those hindsight 20/20 scenarios... ? Since cannabis companies are fast-growing and ever-evolving, setting up your company for a seamless transition to new leadership is something that we should plan for, even if it's a quick general plan. Cannabis companies listen up! It is the best time to hire this time of year. As a company you have a the best vision right now for exactly what your business is doing well and what you need to improve. As a company you have the best vision right now for the skills and abilities needed that could be transformative for your departments or your organization. There is still time to act on getting that skillset in place to start the new year. If you wait until next year to start you are likely not to get someone in the door until March / April. That is 6 more months with the same need. For some critical roles that is the difference between success and failure for your company. In cannabis 95% of all stakeholders are working the week of December 30th. It is a great week to onboard a critical hire. There is still time. If a candidate is turned off by an interview process that occurs during the months of November and December, they are going to be turned off by working in an industry where customers shop nights and weekends and plants never sleep. Let me know how FlowerHire can be helpful.
