5 Types of Casting Inoculants for steelmaking

  • Silicon-Based Inoculants: These are commonly used to control graphite shape and distribution. They include ferrosilicon and silicon-carbide.
  • Calcium-Based Inoculants: Calcium is used to modify graphite shape and improve impact resistance. Examples are calcium silicide and calcium carbide.
  • Manganese-Based Inoculants: Manganese helps refine the grain structure and improve the mechanical properties of cast iron. Ferromanganese is a common example.
  • Rare Earth Elements: Such as cerium and lanthanum, these are used in small amounts to enhance the overall quality and properties of ductile iron.
  • Complex Alloys: These include combinations of silicon, manganese, and other elements designed for specific casting requirements.
