When it comes to leading transformation, navigating the inherent complexity requires more than just managing change—it demands a comprehensive approach. The 5Ts model introduces a framework designed to guide organizations through transformation by harnessing five key cornerstones:?
Time: More Than Just a Resource
Time isn’t just about managing calendars or blocking hours for tasks. In transformation, time refers to the focus and meaning we bring to each moment for ourselves, with others, and how that intersects the key priorities and challenges of our organization. It’s about understanding the immediate and long-term significance of what we do.
Consider an organization that has recently expanded into the EMEA region with three new offices, including one through acquisition. While the immediate focus is on scaling existing products and services, there is also a long-term objective of developing an innovative, breakthrough offering within a few years—one poised to be a game changer in the market. Multiple departments and teams will be engaged in this expansion over time, and they must learn to balance current operational priorities with the evolving demands of this transformation. Additionally, it will be crucial to elevate the organizational culture, fostering stronger collaboration across people, teams, and the newly integrated offices. Although the impact of these efforts won’t be realized immediately, we need to leverage time as a strategic tool to balance how we manage both today and tomorrow at the same time.
In transformation, time must be viewed as a valuable asset. It's not enough to merely allocate hours; the real question is: Are we using time to achieve what truly matters? This perspective on time ensures that short-term tasks align with long-term goals, creating momentum toward lasting organizational change.
Touch: Connection Within, Around, and Beyond
Touch, in the context of transformation, isn’t about superficial interaction. It's about total connection—understanding what’s happening within your organization, with your customers, and even beyond your immediate environment. Too often, businesses rely on data and dashboards to gauge performance, but real transformation comes from truly knowing what’s going on at every level.
For example, a breakdown in alignment might occur when different teams or departments have varying interpretations of a project. The result? Missed deadlines, confused customers, and underwhelming outcomes. The solution lies in creating a seamless experience, both for employees and customers, through ongoing connection and clarity.
By fostering this level of touch, you ensure that your employees are not just doing their jobs but owning the outcomes. Real transformation occurs when there’s alignment between the employee experience and the customer experience—driven by the same culture, values, and goals.
Tension: The Catalyst for Growth
In any transformation, tension is unavoidable—and necessary. It arises when the pressures and demands of today conflict with the goals and expectations of tomorrow. Instead of avoiding it, organizations must embrace tension as a driving force for innovation and progress.
Think of tension as a fundamental force that stretches your organization to grow. Much like muscles require tension to strengthen, your business needs tension to innovate and reach its full potential.?

Threshold: Where Urgency Meets Commitment
Threshold refers to the magnitude or intensity that must be surpassed for transformation to take place. It’s the point where an organization must make a decision: stay stagnant or push through to achieve impactful change.?
This concept is illustrated through numerous examples, one of which can be framed around revenue/profitability. One scenario could be that we are achieving record year-over-year growth in revenue and profitability and we are putting a lot of pressure on our current capability and capacity so much so that we are starting to see a drop in customer experience, the number of services they are buying, and more exits. We need to ensure we define that threshold point for either slowing growth or accelerating how we improve the business to stay ahead of the demand.?
Organizations often face similar moments, where the status quo no longer suffices, and significant shifts are required to survive and thrive. The key to crossing the threshold is having the readiness and focus to strengthen organizational capabilities, rather than simply upgrading individual skills. By fostering resilience, creating urgency, and leveraging obstacles into opportunities, businesses can unlock new potential and drive lasting transformation.
Tipping Point: The Moment of Full Commitment
The tipping point is the moment when an organization decides that "enough is enough" and commits fully to transformation. It is the culmination of the 5 Ts, where all prior steps converge, creating a shift so significant that the organization can never return to its previous state. The tipping point demands a deep sense of ownership and accountability across all levels.
Much like Ozzy Osbourne's realization—getting "sick and tired of being sick and tired"—organizations must reach a point of no return, committing fully to the path ahead. This mindset shift, coupled with a focus on both short-term and long-term impact, solidifies the tipping point as the defining moment in any transformation journey.
