The 5 Truths About Fear and The 1 Lie That Will Hook You Every Time!

Have You Ever Heard of the Saying, "Scared Sh!tless and Doing it Anyway?"

If you are an entrepreneur you have probably had to make some scary choices about investments, partnerships, actions and facing those fears are part and parcel of the job. But what happens when your fears take over your ability to take aligned action? You must debunk them quickly.

Today I will break down the most common fears you may be experiencing and support you to take action anyway. After all, when you are stopped- so is the world! "You are not alone and your fears don't need to stop you!"

So, what are the most common fears that entrepreneurs face?

  • The fear of failing
  • Fear of change
  • The fear of taking a risk
  • Fear of uncertainty
  • Fear of not being good enough
  • Fear of letting down others
  • Success-related fear

What does this all mean?

According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics,?as reported by Fundera , approximately 20 percent of small businesses fail within the first year. By the end of the second year, 30 percent of businesses will have failed. By the end of the fifth year, about half will have failed. And by the end of the decade, only 30 percent of businesses will remain — a 70 percent failure rate.

If you want to succeed in business you get to shift your mindset around fear and I will support you today!

Here are some truths about fear that will have you reframe your thinking:

Truth #1 As long as you continue to grow, fear will NEVER go away.

So many people say to me, "When I get over my fears I will do it- the Facebook live, reach out to people, that Tedx Talk...what ever is scary. You may be waiting for a LONGGGGGG...time.

Try this instead: Ask the question, "What am I really afraid of?"

When you feel fear and ask yourself, "What am I really afraid of?"

You may notice that the fear seems so large and scary. To make it less scary, take your fears down the rabbit hole to your death. It's actually hilarious. It sounds like this.

"What am I afraid of?"

"I will lose my investment"

"And then what?"

"I won't be able to afford food"

"And then what?"

"I will starve."

"And then what?"

"I will die."

It sounds outrageous but this is what our brain does in every fearful situation (unconsciously of course) and then we consciously say,"It's too risky."

When you do this activity you will laugh at yourself and find humour in the fear. Let fear be a little mouse instead of the giant shadows.

Truth #2: The only way to get outside of your fear is to go and do it!

I did my first TedX talk to overcome my fear of public speaking. I was legit scared shitless. I felt like I couldn't breath and I might actually die on stage- and I didn't. Watch the first 3 minutes if you don't believe me. My voice was quivering AND I survived and you will too.

Try this instead: Do something that scares you every day.

When you do this it becomes more of a game you get to play with yourself and you will start shifting your beliefs from, "This is scary to this is fun!"

  • Have a challenging conversation
  • Invest in yourself
  • Do a Facebook live
  • Reach out to a potential client and share your business with them

Whatever scares you, do it until it no longer feels as paralyzing.

Truth #3: The only difference between fear and excitement is the exhale: So don't forget to breathe

I love going to see the fireworks. My city has an amazing show. Every time I see them the same thing happens. We are all anxiously waiting for the first explosion and then, "Pop" the first firework ignites and we all jump at the sound and hold our breath. An immediate fear response.

Then what happens next is magical. The exhale of the beauty that the lights create and we all release with an, "Ooh, Ahhh."

What if fear could be seen like the fireworks- beautiful and alive? Wouldn't that make scare choices seem less scary knowing that you are about to do something exciting!!

Try this instead: Tap into how you might feel after you take the scary action.

When you are about to take a scary action ask yourself, "How might I feel after I do this?"

Step into the energy of the good things that might happen and the empowering stories instead of the doom and gloom outcomes of death.

Truth #4: You are only afraid when you are facing the unknown. So don't worry, everyone else is afraid too!

The most successful entrepreneurs in the world have fears too. People who have done what you want to create have done it scared too. So this should be a huge relief that you are definitely not alone.

I remember when I made my first $7K investment in a coach. I thought I might die. And I didn't and by hiring her I gained the courage to leave my teaching career and jump all in with coaching.

Facing your fears can open up doors you never dreamed possible.

Try this instead: Look for the doors you want to open and open them.

Community partnerships, new connections, referral partners and start a conversation. Let go of the attachment to any results, just be willing to put yourself out there and start those conversations. When you feel like you might die, remind your self that you are just having a conversation and the worst that can happen is the person will say, "No!" or "Not interested."

Big deal. Get used to hearing "No".

For the record, a "No!" NEVER KILLED ANYONE. I promise you.

Truth #5: Pushing through your fear is more gratifying than staying helpless

Pushing through the fear comes with almost an immediate relief. Every time I made an investment- even bad ones, I experienced the feeling of taking weight off my shoulders. The burden felt less heavy and my self concept amplified.

When helplessness subsides, you feel like you can handle anything that comes your way and then you do it again and again until what seemed so scary seems like a no brainer.

Try this instead: Take note of all the scary actions you take in a journal.

This action serves two purposes:

1. You can look back a year from now and laugh at what you thought was scary.

2. You can see how far you've come and celebrate the courage it takes to be a badass entrepreneur.

The #1 Lie about FEAR that will hook you every time.

Fear is Real!
This is such a bold face lie. All fears are lies! They are stories you and I make up to keep us from experiencing our badass true essence. Big games require bold moves. Bold moves require a reframe of our narrative. Every. Single. Time!

The question is this: Do you want to be part of the 70% that fail or the 30% that kick fear bootie and make more revenue, impact and freedom in your life?

If you are tired of letting fear get in your way then let's talk. Entrepreneurship is for the bold and courageous. You ready to play a bigger game?

Cheers to you and your success!

As a mom, I get it - how hard it can be to grow a business without sacrificing the commitments to the people you love (and yourself).

I remember when I had a hard time being present with my family and felt like I was dropping every ball I was juggling.

That’s why I was so thrilled when my friend, Melisa told me she was hosting an interview series all around this topic, which was actually born out of her own research project to learn HOW entrepreneur moms are doing business, having time for themselves AND being present for their family.

It’s called: COURAGE TO LEAD UNLOCKED: Revealing Secrets for Creating Genuine Love and Monumental Fortune!

This is a great opportunity for anyone in my community who is a mom or wants to have a family (and of course you can attend if you’re not a mom because the topics are valuable for all leaders who want to make the most of their life and relationships).

I have a complimentary ticket for you to attend. You can register using this link.

Just so you know, you will be able to watch from your home, office or on the go.

This is for women who want to have it all - be the courageous, loving leader at home and at work so that they can feel good about themselves and enjoy living with the people they care about while building their impactful empires!?

See you March 25 and 26th!
