5 Transformative Development Projects Implemented in Ethiopia
Ethiopia is the second most populous nation in Africa, following Nigeria, and it is one of the fastest-growing economies in the region. The country is rich in diverse cultures and history; however, it faces significant challenges, including poverty, malnutrition, health crises, and inadequate access to education.
To address these challenges, international financial institutions, multilateral and bilateral organizations, and government bodies play a crucial role by implementing impactful projects that drive change. In this blog, we will explore the top five projects in Ethiopia that have made a positive impact. These initiatives not only improve the quality of life for countless individuals but also contribute to the overall stability and growth of the nation.
1. Private Sector Development Project?
GIZ GmbH has been working in Ethiopia on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) since 1964. One of its projects is the Private Sector Development project, commissioned by BMZ. The COVID-19 pandemic, the conflict in the north of the country, and the effects of the Ukraine war are placing additional pressure on the economy. Micro-, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) are particularly affected by these phenomena. In reaction to the situation, the project is working to benefit MSMEs, start-ups, and small, growth-oriented companies from improved growth opportunities, and to create jobs so the population can earn income.
2. ONEWASH National Programme
Playing a crucial role in Ethiopia’s gradual transformation into a modern economy, UNICEF has been active in Ethiopia since 1952. The organization provides an update on the situation and needs of children in a country or region, as well as information on UNICEF’s response and funding requirements. In Ethiopia, 60% to 80% of health issues arise from communicable diseases linked to unsafe water and poor waste disposal while about 50% of undernutrition stems from inadequate hygiene and lack of access to water. UNICEF collaborates with the Government of Ethiopia on the ONEWASH National Programme, a sector-wide and multi-sectoral approach to WASH programming. This initiative ensures equitable access to safe water and sanitation, particularly for women, children, and vulnerable groups, while promoting hygiene practices and ending open defecation.
3. Ethiopia Digital ID Project
In December 2023, the Government of Ethiopia and the World Bank Group finalized a financial agreement for the Ethiopia Digital ID Project. This initiative, valued at $350 million and spanning five years (2023-2029), aims to support the Government of Ethiopia (GoE) in implementing Fayda, a reliable and inclusive digital foundational ID system, along with other digital public infrastructure. The project is designed to enhance access to and delivery of both public and private sector services and economic opportunities, particularly for the most vulnerable populations, while also strengthening national resilience.

4. Financial Sector Strengthening Project (FSSP)
The World Bank approved a $700 million credit from the International Development Association (IDA) for the Financial Sector Strengthening Project (FSSP) in Ethiopia. This initiative aims to enhance the stability of the country’s financial sector by addressing challenges such as inadequate regulatory frameworks and weak institutions.
The project will modernize the National Bank of Ethiopia’s regulatory framework, support governance reforms, and recapitalize key banks, including the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia and the Development Bank of Ethiopia. By building capacity and ensuring institutional resilience, the project seeks to foster economic growth in Ethiopia.
5. Urban Productive Safety Net and Jobs Project
World Bank Group (WBG) is supporting Ethiopia to address fragility and enhance resilience by emphasizing social inclusion, institutional development, economic opportunities, job creation, and service delivery.
The World Bank-supported Urban Productive Safety Net and Jobs Project (UPSNJP) aims to empower Ethiopia’s urban poor through financial literacy, technical training, and startup grants. This initiative facilitates the transition from temporary public works to sustainable entrepreneurship, benefiting 1.7 million people across 88 cities. By combining short-term support with long-term empowerment, UPSNJP promotes economic inclusion and community transformation. Funded by the World Bank with US$ 550 million, the project is implemented by the Ministry of Urban Development and Infrastructure, the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs, and the Ministry of Labor and Skills.
