Lao Tzu, a famous Chinese Philosopher and Writer said:

“Time is a created thing. ?To say:?‘I don’t have time’?is to say,?‘I don’t want to'.”

Whilst Lao Tzu might have lived in the 6th?Century BC, his advice is no less relevant now than it was then. ?We all want to please others, so while saying?“I don’t have time”?might sound nicer, it’s not always the truth.?When it comes to managing your workload, sometimes it pays to be upfront and honest about your priorities. ?This can save a lot of procrastination, hardship and inefficiency. ?By concentrating on work you love, it might even feel that you’ve never ‘worked’ a day in your life.?But, take this with a pinch of salt. ?Sometimes you need to do those tough tasks too.?

Jim Rohn, a renowned American Entrepreneur, Author and Motivational Speaker nailed it when he said:

“Time is more valuable than money. ?You can get more money but you cannot get more time.”

Today’s edition requires no great introduction.?Time management is a topic that we are all very familiar with and constantly working on mastering.?Nowadays everyone is time poor and always looking for the next best thing to help them gain more of it.?However, I am here to tell you that you will never manage your time better until you master your mindset.?So rather than investing in the latest app, software, gadget etc.?Invest in yourself and read on to find out why this is so important.???

As an ambitious, driven Business Owner, Corporate Leader or High Achiever with too much on your plate, you know that it is a constant challenge managing your time efficiently so that you can work smarter rather than harder and be as effective and productive as you can possibly be.?We all only have 24 hours in a day (even though we often feel we need more) and so we High Achievers are always looking for ways to get more out of every minute so that we can achieve our never-ending list of goals.?Creating and maintaining a healthy balance in both your personal and professional life is the key to your success.?Which is precisely why doing a Personal Development Programme should be part of every High Achiever’s ongoing commitment to themself, as it is a sound investment in their mind, body and business.

1.??They feel frustrated, negative and overwhelmed by the enormity of their workload and goals and are trying to be superhuman to cope.

2.??They rarely relax, exercise, eat or sleep well and often live on a poor diet of coffee, sugar and junk food to get them through the day.

3.??They beat themselves up fearing they are losing control, aren’t good enough and are failing because they aren’t achieving their goals fast enough.??

Stress is the barrier between what we are and what we can be.?It damages your mind, body and business, often without even realising it!

1.??Run the day or it will run you.

One of the major keys to effective time management is just staying in charge.?It can be so easy to start a task and then get distracted by other things as the day unfolds.?It’s exactly like running a business, if you don’t stay on top of things, the business will end up running you before long and you’ll soon be in burnout!?Stop every once in a while and check exactly who is in charge.?Of course, the key to staying in charge is to have a written set of goals with you at all times.?Prioritise them and decide which are the most important.?Constantly review your goals and always ensure they are part of your overall game plan.?You need to clearly define the most important goals from those things that you just have to do to ensure you stay on track and get results.?You’ve heard of the 80/20 rule right!?As I always say, fail to plan and you plan to fail.?A little thought and preparation goes a long way, and will save you a lot of time in the long run.?Many people major in minor things but if you do the planning and stay focused by working on your mind with a High Performance Programme that includes Deep Mindset Work, then you will succeed and be totally in charge of your time.

2.??Don’t mistake movement for achievement.

We all know people who are always busy being busy but the problem is they aren’t necessarily being busy being productive.?They are spending too much time on the things that don’t count and not enough time on the things that do.?Are you guilty of this common pitfall??In order to maximise your performance, wellbeing and success you need to be progressing towards your goals rather than going round in circles and not making any significant progress.?Don’t mistake movement for achievement.?Realistically look at how many hours you have in your working day and assess whether you are wasting a lot of time.?Be brutally honest, so you can see if you need to manage your time better, so you can be even more effective and productive. ?Even the best of us can always make improvements!

3.??Concentrate on where you are.

There is a lot to be said about being present and living in the now.?So many of us start our business day in the shower, over breakfast, on the train or in the car on the way to work.?Granted you may feel as if you are being more efficient with your time by maximising every minute but actually you aren’t!?Trying to work out a strategy for your marketing or composing an email to your employees whilst doing these things actually robs you of quality time, ‘me time’ and time with your loved ones, which you need to ensure you play and stay at the top of your game.?Be present and wait until you get to the office before starting work, I promise you that you will be more effective and productive if you do this.?Living in the now isn’t over-rated.?It is an art that we should practise and perfect if we are smart and want to get the most out of our day and life.

4.??Learn to say no.??

In this modern day and age when everyone has far too much to do, it is way too easy to be too accommodating and say yes too often.?Knowing your limits and protecting your time is the best way to avoid taking on too much and putting unnecessary stress and pressure on yourself.?At the end of the day, people will always be happy if you always say ‘yes’ to their requests.?But you can’t please everyone all the time, you can only please some people some of the time.?So don’t try to be a ‘People Pleaser’. ?Respect yourself and your time because life is short and time waits for no-one!?Strike a balance and know that if someone doesn’t respect your decision when you say ‘no’, then they really don’t have a very high regard for you or your time.?The people that matter don’t mind and will accept what you say even if initially they don’t like the answer they are given.?Know your limits, appreciate yourself and your time, otherwise you will never achieve your goals and will constantly be helping others to achieve theirs.?Balance is the key.?Say ‘yes’ to the people who you know will appreciate the time and effort you take out of your day to help them.?Evaluate what is truly important to you and what will just take time away from your ambitions and precious quality ‘me time’, as well as time with your loved ones.

5.??Appreciate the little things.

Working towards achieving your goals on your path to success should be a pleasurable experience.?Yet so many of us get hung up on the overall vision and mission that we forget to celebrate the small wins along the way.?Appreciating what we have achieved to date is as important as staying focused on the overall goal.?It can also help us to stay motivated and committed when things get tough, as they inevitably do on the entrepreneurial rollercoaster.?Celebrating your daily wins is a great way to recognise your achievements and not focus too much on what you still haven’t done yet.?This is a very common trait in the ambitious, driven Business Owner, Corporate Leader and High Achiever, and needs to be kept in check otherwise it can become a very negative and destructive force.?Accept that some days you will have more time to get to the more mundane, minor tasks that play on your mind albeit they are genuinely less important.?Then when you do, celebrate the fact that you have cleared them off your ‘To Do List’ and feel lighter for it.?These small wins are still worth celebrating and are just as important as the big achievements. Success is about constantly moving forward and working towards your goals, little achievement by little achievement.?Anything is possible if you get smart and maximise your time.?

Thanks Claire - pertinently timed! I am in reevaluating mode at the moment as I've realised things have got out of balance as they do from time to time. I'm always at risk of saying yes to too many things, usually voluntary ones and spreading myself too thin, so I periodically need to take stock which I've been doing over the past couple of days as well as giving myself a boost by ticking off some mundane things!
