5 top tips to grow your Coaching business

I have had many conversations with coaches over the last 12 months around the challenges of building a coaching business, and my experience shows me that marketing and growing a coaching business, is different to some other sectors.

You have to be more focussed on educating your audience around the benefits of engaging your services, because clients do not buy coaching, many people do not even know what coaching is, so hence this is your first thing you have to take on board.

Secondly you have to figure out who your absolute best ideal client is, not something vague, or too broad. This is probably not new to you, I am just reiterating this fact. But this is my perspective that will help you figure this out.

If you are building your business online, then you have to capture attention really quickly, you also have to build credibility, and develop trust, before people even consider buying your services.

When thinking about your niche and ideal client, do the following things.

  • Create an ideal client profile, the deeper you go on this, the easier it will be to market to those clients, and you can design the right products and services that fit.
  • When you have done this. You then have to prove credibility to your ideal client, so map out what this looks like. Why do you identify with this client?
  • What is their deep -deep problem, that keeps them awake at night. How can you solve that problem.
  • You have to make sure your ideal client can afford your service.

No sales, no business.

Thirdly. Make sure your online profile and banner speaks ONLY to that ideal client, and the challenges they face. If you try to serve everyone, you end up depleted, and your message becomes too vague. You will get lost in the crowd. So go and look at your profile, and see if it needs changing.

Next, own your expertise, and how you can help. That way you will show up with confidence, and you will position yourself as the expert that can help solve your clients problem. To help with this, write out how your expertise and life experiences can help your client.

This is about how you resonate with that person, and how they resonate with you. This is why being focussed on one person helps your marketing to be more effective, so you get more engagement, which when you follow up will lead to more conversations.

Intentionally connect and grow your audience. It's not always about having 1000's of followers, but if you want your coaching business to attract paying clients, then growing your audience, and engaging with them, is a top priority. You need to make time daily to connect with new people, create strong relationships with those you are already connected to, and make time to network.

Be prepared to actively get visible, so your clients can actually find you. This is not as big a deal as you might think, because you can and will grow with your business. It's just about committing to doing a few things on a weekly basis consistently, so you can start to build credibility, and get a following.

Here are some tips to help:

  • To increase engagement on LinkedIn, post three times a week, minimum.
  • Do not chase the algorithm, but monitor what gets engagement, and what doesn't, because then you can tweak or change things.
  • Show the human side of you, not just the professional coach. People want to see who you are as a person, and that's the way you will build relationships.
  • Press the connect button to around 10 people a day.
  • Tell people about your services once a week, so they get to know in more depth what you offer. That way you are being transparent, and when the time is right they will reach out to you knowing what the price is.

My final point is to remember, there will always be things that make you feel uncomfortable, but that doesn't mean you can't do those things. Just pick a few things and do them consistently, as you grow, you can add something extra. Just get comfortable and confident first.

The first two or three years can be so excruciatingly hard, because when you start from scratch you have a lot more energy going out, than you have coming in. You are spending money, with none or little income, so it's very easy to get depleted emotionally, and physically.

I want you to see growing your coaching business as a CPD journey, because then your mindset will change. You are more likely to identify the gaps in your business knowledge and seek out the solutions you need, and the people that can help you.
