When everything in your business relies on you, it's hard work to maintain the status quo... never mind build your business.

The 5 TOOLS You Need To Get Off Your Tools

If you are a property maintenance business owner, you know how easy it is to get caught up in the day-to-day tasks of your business. Between managing your team, dealing with customer requests, and fixing issues that arise on the job, it can be difficult to find the time to focus on growing your business.

?

In this article, I'll discuss some of the key TOOLS you need to get off your tools and start taking your property maintenance business to the next level of profit and fun.

?

1. Track the root cause of why you're always on your tools.

Do you feel pressure to be on site to ensure everything is done correctly? Do you struggle to delegate tasks to your team? Are you worried about the quality of the work when you're not present? Identifying the root cause of your need to be on your tools is essential to finding a lasting solution. Is it a personal belief or lack of trust? Is it the reality of the quality of work not being good enough when you are not there?

?

2. Organise the tasks you can delegate (and to whom).

Once you've identified the root cause, it's time to determine which tasks you can delegate to your team. Start with smaller, less critical tasks, and gradually work your way up to more significant responsibilities. Determine which team members have the skills and training necessary to handle these tasks successfully. Make sure to communicate your expectations clearly and set up systems for accountability.

?

3. Offer additional training and development for your team.

One of the reasons you may be hesitant to delegate tasks to your team is that you don't feel confident in their abilities. Investing in training and development for your team will help you build trust in their skills and give them the tools they need to succeed. Consider offering workshops or training sessions on topics such as customer service, time management, and technical skills.

?

4. Lead the way to create a culture of accountability.

To successfully delegate tasks, you need to create a culture of accountability within your team. Set clear expectations and deadlines, and hold your team members accountable for meeting them. Encourage open and honest communication, and provide constructive feedback and feedforward regularly. When your team members feel accountable for their work, they will be more invested in their success and the success of the business.

?

5. Streamline processes and create robust systems.

Invest in technology that can help streamline your processes and systems, reduce errors, and free up your time. There are many software tools available that can help you manage schedules, track time, and monitor progress. By automating some of these tasks, it will free you up to have more time to focus on growing your business and working on your long term plans. Invest time into creating robust systems so you eradicate any chaos and have control of your business - I guarantee it will be more fun to run.

?

Actions Checklist:

  1. Identify the root cause of your need to be on site, on your tools.
  2. Set goals with timeframes.
  3. Create a written plan with the long term, bigger picture in mind.
  4. Track your progress.
  5. Delegate tasks to your team.
  6. Invest in training and development.
  7. Create a culture of accountability.
  8. Use technology to streamline processes and reduce errors.
  9. Create robust systems to run the business.
  10. Get militant with your time so you can focus on the business growth.

With these tangible, actionable steps, you'll be on your way to building a successful property maintenance business that doesn't rely on you being on your tools all the time.

As a business owner, it's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day tasks and lose sight of the bigger picture. If you're doing any kind of building work you need to step back occasionally to check progress & correct as necessary. It's the same with building a business.
