5 Tips to Start Your Long Term Weight Loss

5 Tips to Start Your Long Term Weight Loss

Weight loss is often front of mind, especially for some of us, with the warmer months being just around the corner.

There are many thousands of ways to lose weight and many thousands of ways to greater health and wellbeing, yet only one that?will work in a sustainable and long term way for you.

That way is learning how to be a Master of YOUR own Mind & Body.?

These are the skills of how to listen and respond to your body in a healthy way that suits you.?

These skills mean never having to go on a diet again, not having to follow another trend or fad and always knowing how to give yourself what you need and when in the right way for you.?

So instead of going on another health kick, that you’ll most likely stop over Christmas and New Years, to start again sometime in Jan, weave some wellbeing into your life instead.

Let’s get a couple of things straight first.

It is often referred to as weight loss, but what most really want is body shape change and fat loss.?

The feeling of being confident and comfortable in your skin and to like looking in the mirror.?

A six pack and ripped muscles are not what most are looking for. Feeling strong, confident, powerful and content within are often the bigger motivators.?

Thankfully being the right shape and size for you is a by product of being healthy. A wonderful consequence of achieving optimal health and wellbeing, so a focus first on wellbeing will give you far greater results than you could ever imagine.?

In contrast, a focus only on weight loss will have you yo yo-ing, lacking energy, feeling restricted, creating feelings of guilt when you give yourself a “treat” and taking away from all areas of your life, instead of giving to it.?

This is why weaving wellbeing into your life is the absolute best way to not only lose body fat and change shape, but enjoy the energy, focus and power that comes with optimal health and wellbeing.?

So if you want to be in your best shape, start with these 5 tips first.?

Focus on the immediate results

When losing weight, you will often hear “you’ll see results in 6 weeks”, “others will notice in around 12 weeks”, “You won’t notice results for a while, but keep going” ?

For most this can be disheartening and distracting and can lead to defeat yet again.

This needn't be the case though. If your only focus is on weight loss, then yes you’ll notice some results in weeks to come, if however, you focus on other outcomes, you’ll notice results straight away and be much more inclined to continue as you enjoy your journey.

Some of these may be:

  • Feeling energised straight away if you’ve chosen to move your body in the right way for you
  • Pride as you do what you said you would
  • Greater focus as your gut health improves due to eating in a way that supports your body
  • Less pain due to lowered inflammation in your body
  • A sense of calm due to releasing pent up energy with breathing techniques or the right movement
  • Better quality sleep due to choosing to put down your device 30 minutes prior to bed
  • An abundance of energy due to greater oxygenation through your body?
  • A sense of confidence from feeling stronger in your body
  • Better moods, due to an increase in positive chemicals and connections in your body
  • And the list just goes on

Throw away the scales

As discussed you most likely don’t really want weight loss, you want fat loss and body shape change and size, with an increase in muscle mass (not to be confused with bulk).?

Even if scales are still important to you, you need to recognise that the scales will go up and down frequently on any given day.?

You would have been through it before. Feeling great one day or week because the scales have represented your hard work and sacrifice, only to feel like giving it all away the next because the scales aren’t where you want them to be or you think they should be.

Think about this.. you can go to the toilet and weigh less, but look exactly the same in the mirror and feel exactly the same way in your own skin…..what does that tell you??

A far better tool for measurements are the measurements of your body in specific areas, how you fit into your clothes and most importantly how you feel within yourself.

So unless you're an athlete or are using scales for a specific reason with your health professional, do yourself a favour and step away

Nutrients count

The whole it doesn’t matter where your calories come from and the I feel awful, but it’s only for a short time thinking while dieting, is quite disturbing.

Do you want to feel like crap while losing weight, changing body shape and size, or do you want to learn how to fuel your body for performance, while learning how to achieve optimal health?

Feeling energised, focused, productive and powerful are all significantly impacted by the nutrients you place in your body. If you really want to be your best, you need to fuel your body with nothing less.

The right shape and size for you is a by product achieving optimal health, so putting yourself through another restrictive way of eating and living for a short time is a complete waste of your energy, effort and enjoyment.

This is such a big topic that it deserves a few more articles all of its own .

Eat more slowly

Eating slowly has so many positive impacts that it’s something anyone can benefit from, whether wanting want to lose weight or not.?

You will be surprised at the positive changes that occur when you’ve integrated this very simple practice into your day.

Do you know how long you take to eat your main meal?

Start by timing yourself with your main meal without changing anything.

Time from when you start eating until you finish.

Taking at least 10 minutes to enjoy your main meal is a minimum, so if you’ve eaten your main meal in less than that, add a minute each week until you reach the 10 minute mark.

You’ll notice a positive difference on your digestive system, energy, feelings of hunger, cravings and your belt buckle. Such a simple tool that creates such a huge difference.

Food is not the problem

Understand that food is not the problem but a symptom of any underlying problems.

Your body works within 4 Pillars of health.

Physical, Mental, Emotional and Soulful.

All of these contribute to optimal health and wellbeing and so long term body shape change.?

What would be the point of restricting yourself and focusing only on what you eat and how much you move, if you aren’t addressing your thoughts, habits and patterns that got you to where you are in the first place?

What is the point of eating less, when you’re not dealing with your emotions that lead you to seek food as your comfort in the first place?

If you want long term results, make the long term changes that create those results.

Before you start another health kick or diet, ask yourself, wouldn't you rather Master your Mind & Body once and for all and enjoy the long term results that come with achieving optimal health and wellbeing?

Yours in Health
