As I reflect on the course of my career, I would say I was routinely the ‘youngest’ one in the board room, on the executive team, and many times younger than the employees on my team.??
In most instances it didn’t phase me because I was harder on myself than any peer, mentor or boss could have been.? I was self-critical to a point that drove perfectionism and achievement over all else, and while that did attain the ivory tower, it also attained a lack of fulfillment, loneliness, and emptiness…..but I digress, the topic at hand today is self-confidence!!
SO fast-forward 15 years and I decided to walk away from it ALL…. I ditched the golden handcuffs and bet 1,000% on my ability to learn how to become an entrepreneur, CEO, and executive coach.??
It was and still is often that I hear “you have so much confidence, you are so courageous in what you are doing ...........when you are presenting in a meeting, speaking in front of an audience, or trying to launch yet another new business without yet proof of concept"…..
Hmmm ?? as I turned my head to see who they could have been talking about behind me?
???
It is astounding to find that 75% of women professionals report having experienced imposter syndrome at some point in their career, and 85% believe it is a common experience among women, and I am NO exception.?
Imposter Syndrome and self-confidence always seem to become front and center during periods of change and new beginnings.? For me, every new role, brought anxiety, fear of failure, and wondering why someone selected me for the role...... HOWEVER, while I did experience imposter syndrome, I overcame it by holding an extreme amount of self-confidence in my ability to learn ANYTHING!!
I think we all know WHY we are all here on this important topic, but just to put a cherry on top, research has proven that self-confidence is directly correlated with living a more happy and more fulfilled life.?
So let's first define 'Self-Confidence' for context...
The American Psychological Association defines self-confidence as "a belief that one is capable of successfully meeting the demands of a task."
?To me, it simply comes down to the degree of trusting oneself.
In the face of a new goal, a new job, or a career pivot, let's talk about HOW someone can build self-confidence in the face of the unknown...
5 Tips to Radiate Self-Confidence??
Are you someone who just agrees with the popular vote, or perhaps, you hit snooze instead of making that morning work out your promised yourself, did you promise your kids you would take them to the park but cancel and blame a ‘busy’ work schedule????
2. Set SMART goals. Let's be real for a moment, there is no instant success in a career change when it comes to things like, doubling company growth, tripling your revenue, or cutting attrition in half… if you don’t set realistic expectations you will burn out or shut out PERIOD.? Remember Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.?
How about considering things like building positive working relationships with your colleagues (set 4 meetings with colleagues this week), learning how to do your job with confidence (learn and put into practice 3 items on your job description within the first month), setting up an organizational structure to your week (time block your calendar for the following week every Friday), starting a business (set a meeting with a financial advisor, a mentor, and discuss with your family)…

3. Become the identity of WHO first… Do not start with the result or the outcome as the focus of your work.?Start by looking at the habits of the identity that you wish to become.? First, embody the truest characteristics of WHO. Once you are looking through the lens of a new identity your energy will attract an opportunity to meet the characteristics, and your brain will trigger action.??
Consider becoming a runner vs training for a marathon, your focus becomes progress, training, and long-term lifestyle changes instead of an event and then ‘fall off the wagon approach’!?Consider becoming a CEO vs. opening a business, the focus becomes systems, processes, foundation, and scale, vs. the launch or the opening day! How about being a healthy human vs. losing 20 lbs? Your focus is long-term sustainable habits, conscious choices asking yourself routinely is this ‘healthy or harmful’ to being a healthy human…vs getting on the scale every week and celebrating or punishing yourself.
Becoming the identity is a theory explored in the book: Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones, by James Clear
4. Understand and honor your values. Values change, so a values assessment should be completed at least once per year if not twice per year.? Here is a link, get to know WHO you are and honor where you are right now today ..........
“Who you are, what you hold dear, what upsets you, and what underlies your decisions, are all connected to your personal values.
Your values reflect what is important to you. They are a shorthand way of describing your motivations. Together with your beliefs, they are the causal factors that drive your decision-making.”
5. Establish and practice a morning routine.?
If you have studied ANY number of the most successful people, most results-driven people have morning routines in common.? People like Oprah, Michael Jordan, and nearly all of the “billionaires, icons, and world-class performers” interviewed in the book, Tools of Titans, by Tim Ferriss, all have a ritual they do before starting their day and engaging with other people.? The four most impact areas of focus are:?
Want to be a SUPER STAR!?!? Include all 4 in your morning routine!?
Alright, that’s the big 5, which one(s) will you implement today?? You have the information, will you be the 1% that acts on it or the 99% that puts it in a pile on their desk for another day.....
Don’t let your confidence OR your future slip into the I don’t know abyss, take control of your life and be damn proud to do it!
