5 TIPS FOR JOB-OFFER NEGOTIATIONS
1. Remember to stay likable.
Being tough may not get you as far as being someone whom the person across the table likes and therefore wants to hire.
2. Don’t play hard to get
If you make it seem as though the company won’t be able to hire you, the employer is unlikely to expend any effort to do so; make it clear that you see the job as viable if the offer is right.
3. Get ready for real questions.
Lying isn’t a good idea, so come to the discussion knowing that they will ask you whether you have any other offers and whether this company is your top choice—and know how you’ll answer.
4. Keep your schedule in mind.
If you’re working with several offers, you may want to slow one of them to keep them all proceeding at a similar pace; once an offer has been made, the company will want an answer soon, and you may want to have options.
5. Try to ignore ultimatums, and don’t make them.
No one likes to be told what to do, and ultimatums often end up backfiring on the one who makes them, but keep your cool if the other party makes one; they may soon realize that it didn’t make sense.
