If there’s one thing you can be certain of in life, it’s that it’s unpredictable. There’s not a person out there who won’t, at one time or another, have to face some unexpected challenges.
Whether you're facing a personal setback, having problems in the workplace, or are affected by the seemingly non-stop rollercoaster of global events, your ability to bounce back and adapt is crucial. It’s called resilience, and it's a skill that can be, or perhaps should be, developed and strengthened over time.
Resilience isn't just about facing challenges; it’s about overcoming them. Rather than avoiding stress or putting on a brave face, resilience is the ability to take on challenges head-on, learn from those experiences, and come out stronger. When you consider the issues that many are facing in today’s world, building resilience is more important than ever.
Let’s explore five practical tips to help you build your resilience:
Cultivate a growth mindset
The growth mindset is a concept developed by Dr Carol Dweck, theorising that abilities can be developed over time through consistent practice. The contrast is a fixed mindset, the idea that you’re born one way or another, and that cannot be changed.
Playing sport is a great way to demonstrate the idea of mindset – imagine you want to play tennis. Someone with a fixed mindset would pick up the racquet for the first time, and whatever skill level they’re at, they might think that’s as good as they’ll ever be (or they’ll be annoyed that they’re not automatically brilliant!).
Someone with a growth mindset would understand that playing tennis is a skill that improves with practice, training, and trying various techniques. This growth mindset is what builds resilience—when faced with an obstacle, instead of walking away defeated, look for alternative ways to achieve your goals, reframing challenges as opportunities for growth.
Build a strong support network
‘No person is an island’, ‘It takes a village’, ‘There’s safety in numbers. These sayings might be old-fashioned, but they all mean the same thing: you can’t do it alone.
When it comes to developing resilience, having a strong network around you is crucial. Humans are social creatures, and while we may not live in caves anymore, our brains still crave connection with others to feel safe.
If you tend to handle things solo, try to expand your network and nurture existing relationships: volunteer for a cause, join a club, or connect with peers in your field. Remember, supporting others can be just as valuable as asking for help.
Practice self-care and stress management
The term "self-care" might make you want to roll your eyes, but it’s not all about spa days and retreats. Self-care means looking after your mind and body by eating right, getting enough exercise, and prioritising rest.

These are the building blocks for managing stress, which in turn makes you more resilient. Think of it this way: your health is your foundation—if that’s in good shape, you’re better prepared to handle challenges. Start small if needed, with daily habits that promote wellness.
Set realistic goals and celebrate small wins
You wouldn’t run a marathon without months of training, so why approach your other goals any differently? Whatever you’re aiming for, break it down into manageable, bite-sized steps.
Set SMART goals—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. By doing this, each milestone you hit will feel like an accomplishment rather than another hurdle.
And remember to celebrate small victories along the way. Taking time to acknowledge progress can keep you motivated, which in turn builds your resilience.
Roll with the punches
One of the key aspects of resilience is learning to expect the unexpected. Challenges are inevitable, so instead of being derailed by them, embrace them as learning opportunities.
When something goes wrong, take a step back and analyse it. What could you have done differently? What can you learn from the situation to ensure its handled better next time?
