5 tips on how to create the successful remote team

We all want to drive our projects to the end.

This is why we hire specialists and create the teams.

Just like fantasy books, the team has to be created of different people, with different skills complementing and supporting each other.

Sounds like a pretty hard task to create a good team, doesn't it?

Sometimes, for different reasons, some members of the team work remotely, which makes cooperation even harder.

In Algoteque we create dedicated teams of programmers working remotely, for our clients.

Here are a few tips on how to do it:

  • Not only hard skills. Your team can't consist only from people with hard skills. Even the best programmer is useless if he can't cooperate with his colleagues.
  • Keep part of the team on your side. You need those people to keep the knowledge on your side. They are very useful if you decide to change your software provider, also they can give you inside knowledge, how is the work going on inside the team.

  • Use nearshore, it is good to have them close. It is tempting to hire cheap workers from the other end of the world, but if you take a look, it is not so good solution. Contact with them is very hard because of different timezone and cultural differences. Poland is a good choice for software nearshore services. Our colleague Tom has even written an article about it.

  • Integrate the team. Visit each other from time to time. Drink a few beers together, get to know each other. It will allow people to feel, that even if the client is 1000 km away, they are part of the team.
  • Use agile methodologies. Regular delivery of created software allows you to control, how fast software is produced, and what functionalities are already done. During the scrum call, you will hear what done each member of the team. Agile methodologies will give you direct control of the project.

The following tips were created based on our software development experience, but it can be easily used in other trades as well.

And how were your experiences with remote teams?

If enjoyed the article, we have created article how to fail the project.

If you are interested in nearshore teams, don't hesitate to contact us.
