What you want to know:

Growing as a leader undoubtedly takes effort, but it’s critical that this effort is channelled in the right areas. These aren’t always obvious, so here are five areas to invest in for effective growth as a leader.

What you can do now:

  • Get to know yourself.?Make sure you understand your own strengths and developmental needs before you start on your growth journey. This includes what you enjoy doing. Seek continuous feedback and assess this feedback with your own self-reflection.
  • Be aware of your energy investments.?Ensure you’re allocating your time to the right things, as if you’re under stress there can be a disconnect between your actual activities and what you want to be doing. Conduct an energy audit by assembling themes of how you spent your time over the last six months and separating it into what’s giving you energy and what isn’t.
  • Establish focus areas.?Once your energy audit is complete, use it to align your actions in the coming months to with your priorities. Limit yourself to five priority areas and start with a priority unrelated to work so that you have personal balance.
  • Assemble a circle of influence.?This helps you with leadership development opportunities. Communicate your strengths to your circle so that they can help you access projects you previously thought to be inaccessible. Include people from both inside and outside of your company.
  • Take responsibility for how you show up.?As a leader, be intentional about how you show up in your interactions with others at meetings and events. Aim to see everything from the other person’s point of view, instead of telling them what you’re doing.
