5 Tips to Get a New Role Without Applying!

It’s Monday morning and your alarm goes off, the Monday blues feel like the end of the final episode of your favourite Netflix series and you start to question whether you really need money or whether it’s possible to live off the fat of the land with your new tomato plant…

It sounds like it’s time to put your virtual ‘Open to Opportunities’ cap on and let Recruiters know you want a new job.

If you’re anything like me, applying for jobs is just as annoying as crumbs in bed, so let me share with you some top tips to make the jobs come to you!

Before I get into the tips, it’s important to know that the 2 most common platformsthat Recruiters use to search for candidates are LinkedIn and Seek Talent Search. All of my 5 tips are relevant for your LinkedIn profile as well as your Seek Profile. If you don’t know what a Seek Profile is – google it!!

Tip 1: Please, please, use standard job titles.

I don’t know what’s with the world these days, but there are sooo many job titles for the same job! Take ‘Recruitment Consultant’ for example. Recruiters can be called ‘Talent Acquisition Consultant’, ‘Candidate Sourcing Specialist’, ‘Candidate Manager’ and that’s not an exhaustive list! 

My advice is to stick to the standard job title. Recruiters should be thinking outside the box to try and include all the fancy job titles, but come on, how much easier would it be if candidates used a standard job title. My prediction is that it will increase the number of search results you show up in and therefore increase the chances of being contacted about jobs.

Tip 2: Flourish your profiles with industry keywords

Recruiters like to search by industry keywords, so take 10 minutes to write a little blurb under each role and include as many keywords as possible. If there are industry abbreviations for keywords, make sure the full word is written out as well as the abbreviation.

Tip 3: Location

If you don’t have a location on your profile, put it on there! You are most definitely eliminating yourself from any search results if you don’t have your location.

Tip 4: Put on your virtual “Open to Opportunities” Cap

Let Recruiters know that you’re open to opportunities by going to your profile, and turn the feature on under ‘Career Interests’.

You could even go a step further and write a sentence or two.

Tip 5: Connect with Recruiters in your industry – go on, don’t be shy, we don’t bite

You can then be a silent scroller and keep a hawk eye on live roles, and send out a cheeky message if anything tickles your fancy.
