5 Tips for Finding the Right Elder Law Attorney

5 Tips for Finding the Right Elder Law Attorney

If you are a caregiver or even if you have an elderly loved one, you might need the services of an elder law attorney. These lawyers specialize in issues that affect seniors, such as elder fraud, estate planning, and more. How can you be sure that you've found the elder law attorney who will best suit your needs? Daily Caring offers five tips to help you make the right decision.

1. Meet in person.

Communicating by email and telephone is fine, but you will not truly know who you are working with until you are both in the same room. Explain your needs in advance, and most lawyers will be willing to have a brief consultation at no cost to you.

2. Value experience.

Ask your potential attorney how much experience they have with elder law. You should get as specific as possible. The more knowledgeable they are, the more confident you will be in your choice.

3. Consider their attitude.

Your lawyer should always remain professional. Evaluate the first couple of interactions. Daily Caring suggests asking yourself questions regarding their behavior. Have they always been prompt and polite, or have you ever felt ignored or snubbed?

4. Keep all records.

Some quick notes of your interaction with each lawyer will help you compare potential attorneys. Make a list of things that are important to you (e.g., experience, distance, and current case load, just to name a few).

5. Do your research.

Look up every potential attorney's name or bar number on the website of your state's bar association. Do their listed credentials match what you were told? Have they ever been professionally disciplined? Don't be afraid to ask for references (you will have to wait for them to get permission from previous clients, however).

These tips from Daily Caring serve as an excellent guide for anyone choosing an elder law attorney. By following this advice, you can select the lawyer whose skillset best suits your situation.
