5 Tips for Finding an Executive Coach

Executives are achievers by nature. They are good at problem-solving, understanding business dynamics, and growing sales. But eventually, every professional will be confronted with the Peter Principle. This theory posits that people's skills and knowledge will help them rise through the ranks until they achieve a position that exceeds their abilities. In other words, they are eventually awarded a title for which they are not qualified and no longer excel compared to their peers.

That's why so many senior executives turn to professional coaches. The right coach can help them improve leadership skills, increase productivity, and provide support to achieve career goals. As an unbiased outsider, an executive coach can assess strengths and weaknesses and identify areas for improvement. Then, they help people build skills that help them reach the next level, whether that's a promotion, a new job, more sales, or selling a business.

1. Predetermine Your Goals

Have you ever heard that saying, "when you're a hammer, everything looks like a nail"? It really applies to coaching. When you're working with a networking coach, they think better networks will solve your problems. A leadership coach will want to approach every challenge with better leadership skills.

That's why it's so important to map out what you want to accomplish before you ever talk to a coach. Do you want to get better at persuasion? Team building? Time management? After you are confident of your goals, you're ready to start looking for a coach.

2. Find the Right Coaching Style

There are a lot of different coaching styles out there, and there isn't a single "right" approach. Instead, look for an executive coach with a working style that fits your needs. Some coaches are directive, while others prefer collaboration. Some focus on developing a particular silo of skills, while others prefer a holistic approach to professional development. Some are warm and friendly; others are all business. Look for ones that are a good match with your personality and professional style.

3. Do the Research

There is no shortage of executive coaches out there. They come with a wide range of experience and expertise. It's smart to limit the consideration set to experienced coaches in your industry. If you can't find a coach specializing in your industry, look for one who has worked with executives with similar challenges. Experience is needed to provide relevant guidance and support.

While credentials are not always necessary, they may be a good indicator of expertise and professionalism. Reputable organizations such as the International Coach Federation or the Association for Coaching offer accreditation.

Referrals are invaluable. Ask around and see if colleagues or professional networks have worked with coaches. Ask for recommendations. It's also a good idea to ask a coach to provide a few referrals.

4. Don't Make Decisions Before Meeting the Coach

If you have good referrals in hand, it may be tempting to hire a coach without meeting them. This can be a real mistake. When you have a few candidates in mind, take the time to schedule a consultation or interview. Have a discussion about their style and approach to coaching.

This first meeting is also an appropriate time to discuss your goals in more detail so you can determine if the coach is a good fit for you. Finally, take note of their personality and how they make you feel. Did the first meeting make you feel hopeful, motivated, nervous, or annoyed?

5. Evaluate Costs

Executive coaches are an investment in your career, but they shouldn't bankrupt you. Establish a budget and stick to coaches who can work within it. Conversely, don't base your decision solely on cost. Sometimes it's better to spend less time with a more expensive coach who meets your needs than settle for more time with a coach that isn't the right fit.?
