5 Tips for Effective and Enjoyable Social Media Marketing

Everything I associated with ’social media marketing’ used to rub me the wrong way.

But over the last three years that’s been changing for me. I’ve had hundreds of conversations (probably thousands at this point) with coaches in our OTA program who are not only trying to get people to buy into what they are offering/selling, but buy into them as a person.

All the while I’ve been absorbing what works and what doesn’t, always trying to strip everything to its most fundamental takeaway, to the underlying principles that make it successful or not in any environment.

I don't have all the answers by any means, but what I can tell you is that the people who utilize social media to its fullest potential dedicate the vast MINORITY of their time to selling, and the vast majority of their time to providing value and communicating with their people (which is selling for them).

Figuring out how to harmonize the two can certainly take some time and trial and error, but no matter what you do, I’ve found you really can't go wrong when you operate within these five buckets:

1. Highlight who you are as a professional.

What do you do? Who do you help? Show people how you’re an expert in your craft, and how your craft can solve their problems.

2. Highlight who you are as a human.

Why are you passionate about what you do? What life experiences fuel your current belief system? Who are you outside of your craft? Give something for people to relate to on a personal level.

3. Communicate with people publicly.

Intentionally create content that sparks conversation, respond to every comment you receive, be purposeful about building a community that people want to be a part of.

4. Communicate with people privately.

Reach out and build meaningful relationships, ask questions, show a genuine interest in other people’s lives, and do this more than once.

5. Be YOU.

Don’t strive to be like someone else, let your authenticity shine. There is only one you on this planet, embrace it, and utilize it to your advantage.
