5 Tips to Choose Your Business Name
When you want to open a business, thinking about a name is one of the first things that you will do, therebefore is a very important task that will impact your business's future. Let’s face it: when someone buys a product, they buy its brand name, they don’t necessarily prioritise its quality or environmental impact. The name will help you build a brand, a reputation, a community and customers.
1. Relate it to your niche
Depending on the type of business you want to open, make sure the name is as relevant as possible to your niche. Including keywords in the company’s name will help people identify what kind of business it is.
Example: If you open a crafts business, you could include in the company’s name words like handmade, handcrafted, custom, bespoke, etc.
2. Keep it simple
Don’t overdo it! People don’t like complicated spellings or long names; they can be hard to remember. Some of the most successful businesses out there have their name consisting of simple words, associated with day-to-day life or abbreviations.
3. Be unique
Thinking outside the box goes a long way. Be bold, brave, and experiment with different words. You can use an online name generator for some inspiration.
4. Associate it with a tagline
If your business name comes with a tagline, you are on the way to building an authentic brand!
A tagline will help you communicate what is unique about your business, why people should come to you and buy your product/service. It will also help build a target audience that your brand relates to.
Example: If you are an environmentally conscious person and your business sells products that are made from eco-friendly materials, the packaging is biodegradable, etc., create a tagline around this idea to reach and attract environmentally conscious customers.
5. Check if the name is not already taken
There is a possibility that someone else came up with the same business name or a similar one before you, especially if you are planning to use catchphrases or abbreviations from your name, niche, etc. To rule out any copyright infringements you must check if the name is already taken by using an online company name availability checker. We recommend using the Government’s official checker and also the UK Intellectual Property Office?trademarks?register before making a decision. Also, make sure that the name is not too similar to your competitors as this can devalue your business and make it look like a copycat.
