5 tips for changing your job when you don’t know where to start

If you are wondering if you will be doing the same job for the next 20 years, here’s some ideas to get started

1.????What do you want more of and less of? Keep a notebook by you at work and note down any activities that you enjoy doing, what gives you satisfaction, when are you in flow? On the other hand, what do you dread doing or wish someone else could do for you?

2.????Think about whether it is the role you are bored of the environment. If you could wave a magic wand and make your work world better what would be the 5 things that you would change?

3.????Notice what gives you energy and what drains you. Remember we are all different. We have different work styles, different values and different preferences. That’s why some people love working from home while others prefer the office. No-one is wrong, despite some of the fiery debates you may see on LinkedIn!

4.????Doing less of what you don’t enjoy. Once you know what you want less of look at ways of making this a reality. Then look for ways to reduce the activities that you don’t enjoy. This could mean learning to use tools e.g. outlook, excel, to reduce the time things take. If you have a team and you can delegate some of the tasks you don’t like, look for ways to do this as quickly as possible. Look to delegate to people who enjoy or want to learn these things. I used to work with a great colleague who loved systems and I don’t, she was happy to do that work and I was happy not to have to.

5.????Many of us have dreams but life gets in the way and you can disappear under a banner of being busy. But this is not going to change unless you do something about it. What boundaries can you put in place to get a better balance between work and the other areas of your life that are important to you.
