It is almost officially summer. I'm checking in on my 9-5er & entrepreneurial parents whose kids are already out of school for the summer. How are y'all doing? You okay?
A colleague & I had a conversation last week about her increased stress due to unproductive searches and attempts to locate affordable activities for her kids this summer. She is NOT okay!
In all honesty, I completely forgot how it felt to desperately search for affordable childcare, day camps, and other summer activities. When your kids become adults, you are so happy to not think/pay for certain things that you actually forget about the intensity of those past experiences.
Our conversation inspired this article, so here it goes...
5 Tips to Avoid Burnout this Summer
- Exercise - Get at least 10-15 minutes of exercise in per day. This will boost your physical and mental health. I suggest you do something that doesn't feel like exercise, yet it is enjoyable, fun, and gets you moving. For example, 25-50 squats over the toilet (my personal favorite), nature walks, jump rope, or hula hoop (the kids can join in on these activities as well). You don't need to spend hours at the gym, but try to find a physical activity that you enjoy and can do consistently.
- Prioritize self-care - Sleep Kings & Queens! By getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, eating well, intentionally identifying your emotional state throughout the day, and taking regular breaks can reduce stress. You can also try some relaxation techniques like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing to calm your mind and body. My personal favorite: Wim Hof Method Guided Breathing for Beginners (3 Rounds Slow Pace) https://youtu.be/0BNejY1e9ik
- Shift your perspective - Is there some meaningful work you are interested in doing, yet, you've not intentionally made time for the activity? Now, is the time to re-evaluate passion/purpose projects. By finding meaning and purpose in your work, setting realistic and attainable goals, and celebrating your achievements you can significantly reduce stress. You can also seek feedback and support from others who have similar passions.
- Reduce exposure to home & work stressors - Start by managing your time effectively, delegating tasks when possible, saying no to unreasonable demands/requests, and avoiding conflicts. Set boundaries Kings & Queens! Create more autonomy and control over your life by talking with your boss and family about your expectations and preferences.
- Socialize and connect - Connect with people who can provide you with emotional support, positive feedback, and a sense of belonging, such as joining a hobby group (book club), volunteer for a cause, and/or find a mentor who can inspire you and hold you accountable.
I hope these tips help you prevent burnout and enjoy your summer. ??
