5 time management tips for managers
As a manager, it can be easy to find yourself overwhelmed with work. You may find your inbox full, have loads of work to catch up on, or have a schedule capped out with meetings. With little time to focus on tasks, it can be difficult to stay on top of your workload. You aren’t alone and many managers struggle with the same issues. Fortunately, by adopting some time management habits, you can structure your day to be more productive and begin lightening the stress of your workload. Here are some great time management tips that will help you regain control of your time at work.
Plan ahead
The first step to addressing the overcharged situation you might find yourself in is to find out where your time goes. Figure out what’s eating away at your day and create time limits for each activity. If you’re spending too much time doing one thing, limit it. Also, don’t be afraid to set time aside planning out your day or week. Time spent planning is not wasted and is an investment that will help you be more productive later on. As Benjamin Franklin once said, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.”
Delegate work
Delegating work is something some managers avoid doing. Scared of receiving subpar results or believing they can do the work better than employees, managers take on workloads they cannot realistically complete. Fortunately, for those managers, there are two options. First, they can choose to train their team to understand what’s required of them. Somebody may not be as efficient or effective as you, but with a little patience and training, you can be sure to create a reliable workforce that can take on some of your tasks. The second option is to hire an outside contractor that has the experience to do so. Both are great, viable options that will help you manage your time more effectively and ensure your skills are being used on responsibilities only you can address.
Organize your email
Your inbox can quickly become overwhelming if you aren’t using techniques to organize your emails based on priority. There are tons of great programs out there that can create folders and automatically re-route emails to appropriate areas. This can help you sort your emails and focus on the ones that are important while saving others for a later time.
Block time off
If you aren’t already blocking time off in your schedule, you should seriously consider doing so. If your team is constantly asking for your attention, it can be hard to sit down and focus on the tasks you need to accomplish. If this is the case, set aside a block of time in the day where you can concentrate on your workload. Ask your team members not to disrupt you during this time and use this block as a moment where you can focus on high-priority items.
Take time for breaks
If you’re busy, it can be easy to work through your breaks. While it may seem like this is a smart choice, you’re likely to experience decreased productivity as you get into the later hours of your day. Breaks allow you to refresh your mind and come back to work reinvigorated. They will help keep you calm in times of stress and will ensure you stay productive throughout the day.
