5 Hotel Manager Thoughts on a Hotel Leader in 2021

Great Hotel Leaders understand that giving away their power does not lessen themselves as a Leader in their Hotel. It actually enhances their power in a Department or within the Hotel, and in turn, they become a more powerful Hotel Leader.
Keeping power to yourself does not create powerful team members; it creates compliance, not commitment in the Hotel.
Traditional Leadership styles have become so embedded in our Hotel Culture that we rarely stop to think if there are better ways to Lead in our Hotel or Department. Is there a Better Way to Lead in Our Hotel?
Perhaps today, in our Hotels and Hotel Departments we should, be practising a form of Servant Leadership? Put simply we should be putting others ahead of ourselves, with less focus on power and more focus on well-being and Community; which in turn leads to Generosity, Respect, Action, Compassion, and Energy within our Hotels.
No matter where in the Hotel you Lead you Must Show Generosity – the Will to Do Something for Others. Generosity is about sharing power and authority. Hotel Leaders should set the right example and sacrifice for the good of the Hotel. The more you give, the more you get back. Things will eventually happen.
No matter where in the Hotel you Lead you Must Show Respect – the Dignity for Life and Work. Respect is about giving people the benefit of the doubt and refraining from pre-judgements. Give your Hotel Teams a chance to prove themselves and do not hold them back from incredible performance on shift. It is about assuming the best intentions of others.
No matter where in the Hotel you Lead you Must Display Action and an Ability for Change. Being a Hotel Leader means you need to act to move the Hotel or Department forward. Action is about showing people how it gets done in the Hotel. Be that person who takes the first step, stands up for the Hotel Team and share the credit for whatever gets done.
No matter where in the Hotel you Lead you Must display Compassion – Have Concern and Humanity for Others. When we talk about work in our Hotel, we often ignore the idea of our employees as significant contributors and as a human being. Look at each Hotel Team member as a whole person and not just a simple cog in your Hotel machine.
And Finally, no matter where in the Hotel you Lead you Must display Energy – Firstly as a Hotel Leader, it is your responsibility to energize your Hotel or Department and catalyse it toward success; And also, you must take care of yourself. You need to eat well, exercise and take care of your mental health. You are a Hotelier and a role model.
Perhaps today Hotel Leadership is more about the Hotel Team. Hoteliers that practice this concept with their team members will grow and feel more fulfilled. While there may be a lot of difficult issues in today’s world of Hospitality, there is also a lot of positivity and growth happening, especially where Hotel Leaders are looking at their people positively.
