Life can be challenging to manage in normal times, but it can be excruciatingly difficult when you need to heal after a dramatic loss or life change. When you are in the midst of dealing with personal trauma, such as the loss of a loved one, health issues, unemployment, divorce, the loss of a job, or money issues, it can be hard to cope and go through the motions of daily life.?
I hold a Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology and have advanced training in Positive Psychology. Unfortunately, even with all my education and titles, I am no stranger to seeking healing after experiencing dramatic loss. I have had to tap into my resilience time after time, heartache by heartache. Some of my greatest griefs were the devastating losses of a business, my co-author to suicide, the death of brothers and parents, and most recentl,y my son's sudden death due to a brain hemorrhage. Grief and fear do not discriminate, but you can counteract them with these five things to help you learn how to heal from emotional pain.?
1-?Gain a strong support system:?
Whether you develop a support system army through your friends, family, or a trained professional therapist, they are vital to seek out. Speak your pain out loud and often with those you trust. Trust means they will Listen -- not Advise -- to you in your time of need. Substantial, dedicated support can make your healing process much more powerful.
2-?Return to Your Daily Routines:?
Try to uphold your typical schedule, no matter the grief and pain. Will you cry throughout the day? Most likely but maintaining a semblance of normalcy can give you great strides in healing from past hurts. The things that helped me were as simple as starting my day in silence, enjoying a cup of coffee in the moment, writing in my journal, turning to my spiritual readings, as well as spiritual support. Sticking to your everyday tasks and responsibilities will only further help you learn how to heal from emotional pain.?
3-?Walk in Nature:?
Spending time outside, breathing in the fresh air, and observing nature can transform healing to your soul and overall wellness. Carve out time and space for yourself to be silent and present with your surroundings. Silence your phone or leave it at home and go on long meditative walks. Walk to find peace.?

4-?Don’t Rush to Look at Photos:
Photographic memories are incredibly special, especially if we have experienced the loss of a loved one. Just be aware that you should move slowly and consciously through your healing, give yourself grace and time before you look at old memories. Then, when you are ready, you will find that memories and photos bring you great comfort to heal after a dramatic loss or life change.?
5-?Stay Engaged with Work You Love:?
Whether it is your professional work, hobbies, or a side passion project, stay engaged and committed to the things and people that give your heart joy, keep you occupied and bring you purpose. When we focus and engage in our professional work, we can make space for more peace within ourselves. As the old adage goes, “idle hands make fretful minds.” See?more advice?from myself and other experts in my field on how to handle grief at work.?
Coping with change can be traumatic since it affects every part of our waking lives. How you deal with loss or change will significantly impact how you get through the hard times and look ahead into the future. Utilizing these five things in your emotional toolkit will help guide you through your pain and into the headspace to heal after a dramatic loss or life change. You can refer to them over and over as they apply to your life. I wish you peace, strength, and healing in your journey.
