5 things you can do to help the world attain Gender Equality

Gender equality is one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and a basic right of every human being. Let's start by giving a basic definition of what gender equality is.

Gender equality, also known as?sexual equality?or?equality of the sexes, is the state of equal ease of access to resources and opportunities regardless of gender, including economic participation and decision-making; and the state of valuing different behaviors, aspirations and needs equally, regardless of gender. (Wikipedia)

So you may be thinking, that is a great definition Queen Ameenata! I want to do my part to make this world a better place. What can I do to get involved? I AM SO GLAD YOU ASKED! I have come up with 5 things I think YOU can DO to further the mission of gender equality.

  1. CHANGE YOUR MINDSET

I truly believe that everything starts in the mind. So if you are serious about making a difference, you must first fix your mind to TRULY believe that all people are equal. Now, this is very important because how you think determines how you operate in the world. Our thoughts impact everything we do from the kind of job we have, the people we hang around, the organizations we join, whom we marry, and so on. This is why before you can do anything else, you must know in your mind and believe in your soul that ALL PEOPLE ARE EQUAL.

2. POINT OUT INEQUALITY AND SEXISM WHEN YOU SEE IT

This ties in with number 1 because once you determine that people are equal and you start looking at the world through a new lens, you will start to notice things that you never paid attention to before. WHEN YOU SEE SOMETHING SAY SOMETHING! We need to highlight things when we see them because if people don't know there is a problem it will never get fixed.

3. EDUCATE OUR CHILDREN ON WHAT EQUALITY IS

This one is HUGE! We must raise the next generation so that they can carry on the work. As they say "Rome wasn't built in a day" and this world didn't get in this condition in a day either and it is going to take consistent work from dedicated people to change things. Part of teaching our children means we must model the correct behavior. Children hear what we say but they watch and imitate what we do. Put some action to your words. This is the perfect time for this as we are in the middle of #16daysofaction. No time like the present to start.

4. STAND UP FOR YOURSELF IF YOU ARE BEING DISCRIMINATED AGAINST

Now, this is probably one of the scariest things a person can do. Oftentimes, we are put in situations where we are uncomfortable because we worry about what others will think, or about the repercussions of what will happen if we speak up, and all of those are real and valid feelings. Let me encourage you by saying that chances are you are NOT the only one that is going through the situation, and when you stand up, there is a good chance others will join you. But even if they don't, be bold, be courageous, be strong and stand up for yourself because YOU DESERVE TO BE TREATED EQUALLY! Remember, it only takes 1 person to start a movement. The entire "me too" movement started because 1 person decided she was no longer going to be silent! Remember that!

5. DONATE TO AN ORGANIZATION THAT WORKS IN THIS AREA

That's right! We can all choose an organization and donate! Every little bit helps, and let's remember that you don't have to donate money (although that helps a lot), you can donate time. Many organizations could do a lot more if they had the manpower, so consider donating time, and if you can donate money. I have listed a couple of organizations that I partner with for you to donate to if you like.
