5 Things That We Sacrifice Our Dreams For

As you go through life you pick up the stuff around you
And then you hate the stuff you pick up and you damn yourself for doing it to yourself!
Till one realisation changes everything
Maybe you’re walking in the wrong neighbourhood?
I have wondered about what makes people give up their dreams. I know I have done it and you probably have done it.
Working closely with people to help them get clarity in their life has NOT been an easy thing for me - Because whil I have seen people finding a new rigour and meaning that continues through the years after they have worked with me,
I have also seen people articulating and bringing their dreams to their current realm - only to give it up sometime later due to "circumstances"
And I learnt that on the top of the list, there are five things that we sacrifice our dreams for (I am including one of those where I also have been at a loss - but then I am also work in progress)
1- "Once I Make Enough Money" - Financial doldrums that we have got caught up in
The first time I worked with someone at Sr Director level at a large IT service company, who had lost his job 6 months back, I was so shocked to learn that he had come to hand and mouth situation.
He had money - but it was caught up investments - and was his "path to great retirement"
And now, I have met thousand+ people who have similar version of their own financial woes - ALL of that will be solved when they have more money!!
If you always do what you have always done
You will always get what you've always got
Everybody’s answer to this big issue is to continue to do what they’re doing a little bit more so that they can get out of this financial challenges. A round and round and round thinking!
Very conveniently, they forget that if it has not happened so far, it’s unlikely to happen.
Time or Luck or Hope or More Money is not the answer
2- "I Dont Want To Lose What I Have Built Up" - Not being able to let go of what they have done for one or two or three decades
Become slave to the world that we are in does something sinister to our mind.
It makes us believe that if we were to start from scratch, all that we have done is for nothing and none of what we have is transferrable skill.
This is just a big fat lie created by our head to keep us safe.
Now when I have seen a few hundred of my clients transition their career in a totally new area or a VERY uncomfortable (to start with) role, I can say for certain that letting go is where it starts.
The sink cost cannot be given more importance than the opportunity cost!
I’ve done it three times and it is extremely painful.
But always worth it
3- "My Past Is My Future" - Not Able To Shift Mindset Enough
Einstein once said you cannot solve a problem at the same level of thinking that you had when you created it.
Everybody listening to it says that I am changing my mindset "slowly".
Only problem with slow mindset change that it always remains very close to the comfort zone!
When I gave up my supposedly successful job for becoming a coach, there was no "I was always like it" or "it was destiny".
It was scary and very very difficult and every single thing in my life pointed that I will NOT make it. No one except my wife believed in me. NO ONE!!
But I went for the rattling the cage so hard that it had to break open. Above all, I prioritised my mindset.
I decided NOT to show up in the "neighbourhood" that was all surrounded by the limitations and challenges.
I’ve helped hundreds of people successfully shift their entire code and it is extremely gratifying to see most living the same path years later!!
Note: More about what it takes - at the end of this article.
4- "It Is Hard To Be Me" - Your Problem Syndrome - Victimhood -
I remember for about one and a half decades, whenever I will lose something at home I always would blame my wife that she has probably kept it "properly" or safely somewhere.
I was blind enough to see that almost never it was the case.
but as we got into the third decade of our marriage, I started finding out the truth was completed different!

I was hundred percent responsible for My Life.
That was not a victim of my circumstances and my situation.
Unfortunately, most people lay their inability to pursue the dreams onto the circumstances and being a victim of the situation rather than doing something about it.
If only the world tilts itself to its axis a fraction of a degree, their life will be much better. And they spend an eternity in living that truth, denying their own responsibility for their life.
WHATEVER you have gone through - it is sad and bad and horrible but if you want to get to a nice place in life - YOU need to take 100% responsibility for everything.
5- "What If I Fail" - a paralysing fear of failure
This one is something I suffer from even today. In spite of all the work that I have done on myself. Though it is not "paralysing" any more.
I used to believe that our failure is just connected to a limiting belief and can be removed either with seeing the impact of it in future and building successes and keeping ourselves motivated.
But in spite of working on myself for last seven years.. I sometimes (probably once a week) find myself thinking that all this will just fall apart one day!
And I have journaled enough to see the pattern - it happens when I am on the verge of doing something big - that needs big investment!
For instance if I had no fear of failure, I will immediately put up at three day, 500 – 100 people Event for corporate folks that would propel my name onto the international stage in the personal development world.
No amount of motivation, affirmation, connecting with the outcome, the dreams is enough to overcome this fear of failure.
And because it is working in progress, I have two possible solutions building up.
Because our brain does not know the difference between dopamine rush of a huge success versus a small success.
And yes, it cost me money, but I’m reasonably certain that that will be justified cost of my big dreams. I have seen this fear not being there when I am actually a part of a cohort that thinks big!
So the endgame. WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THIS?
Are you someone who is giving up on your big dreams?
Are you someone who is so caught up in the rigmarole of life that you have stopped thinking big?
Are you someone who is keen to break away?
Consider your spend.
EVERYTHING that we buy is easy - we give our "hard" earned cash for the privilege of using something else that we had zero contribution in creating.
And that is pretty ALL the investments people make.
And all this while we forget that the PERSON doing the investment isn't being fed!
Your investment in others' stuff may give you pleasure, meet your necessities and lifestyle - but the only way your soul will get nourished is by investing in yourself.
And I dont mean reading a book and doing some cheap online stuff. I mean real hard look at yourself with a perspective you do NOT have. That is possible only with a coach.
