5 things only New Yorkers seem to know.
- THIS IS THE TOP FOR A HOT BEVERAGE. It also works on cold beverages. But the cold beverage top DOES NOT WORK on hot beverages.
2. FLASHING YOUR HEADLIGHTS MEANS do not cut in front of me. It does not mean, "I'm letting you in." Loser.
3. "Yes, I would like the leftovers to go." That means the waiter packs them up nicely and puts them in a pretty bag with a handle or a foil swan. Outside of New York it seems to mean that dinners are handed hideous foam boxes and expected to pack the leftovers using their own power. Then they are handed a check.
4. A diner in New York has these hours: 24. Outside of New York and New Jersey there don't seem to be any diners. A few call themselves diners but they close at 2PM. That's not a restaurant, that's a hobby.
5. A black coffee is hot coffee with nothing in it. A regular coffee is coffee with one sugar and some milk. A coffee with milk is coffee with some more milk. A "light" coffee is coffee with more milk than a coffee with some milk. A coffee to-go is not coffee to "take out". A coffee to-go is packed tightly in cardboard sheets, corrugated wrap and a strong paper bag that is not too big and plenty of napkins. "Foam" and "soy" have nothing to do with coffee. Are we clear? What did I leave out? Comments welcome.
