5 things to NOT include in your CV

5 things to NOT include in your CV

Your CV is the difference between you potentially landing your desired job or struggling to do so. It is essentially a piece of paper that should bring out your strengths and achievements. Have you submitted your CV everywhere and you’re still waiting for that call? Perhaps it's time to go back and rework your CV, and here are some things you may want to avoid.

  1. DON’T use Graphics such as logos, charts and tables. As aesthetically pleasing as they may be, graphic designs aren’t recognized by most ATS systems! Your CV file may then get corrupted, and this is what your recruiter will see in the system.

2. DON’T include your whole life story, this prolongs the length of your CV and it would include many irrelevant details! Remember the average recruiter spends less than 6 seconds reviewing each CV! No one wants to read a book! Focus on summarizing the important details!

3. DON’T use social media links (except your Linkedin profile)

4. DON’T Include additional documents! Do not attach your certificates, a copy of your passport, or ID. Your CV should be its own single file. If in the case the job applications requests for additional documents, then attach those documents on a separate file.

5. DON’T have irregular formatting. Always try to put yourself in the shoes of the recruiter and how they would react to opening your CV. Should there be irregular spacing between paragraphs, different font sizes for the body, and headings this can lead to your CV looking disorganized and not appealing to the recruiter. Recruiters are quoted saying things like ‘’ If the candidates’ CVs are formatted badly, then there isn’t much point in reading on.” So make sure your formatting is consistent throughout!

Follow these 5 steps and you’re destined for greater opportunities
