5 Things I Learned This Week | 11/24/18
- “Don’t let them assimilate you.”
This is a piece of advice that Harry Schlange, the CAO, gave to me when I joined the Economic Development Office. It’s important you retain your unique experiences and professional background. Those two things add diversity and innovation to an organization, while helping to avoid tunnel vision.
2. Taking on less makes you more effective.
This past month has been incredibly busy for me. I’ve been watching the way Devin Ramphal works and have been taking notes. He told me about the 4Ds (do, defer, delegate, delete) approach he takes to his inbox and how he transfers that to his work. Delegating often so you can focus on the items that you’re uniquely qualified to tackle is better for the productivity of your entire team.
3. High schools are realizing that university/college isn’t for everyone.
Historically, I haven’t been the biggest fan of schooling (different from education). My high school marks weren’t stellar. So you can imagine my surprise when my old guidance counselor asked me to deliver a keynote about entrepreneurship at their post-secondary fair. The workplace has new demands for the talent pool and high schools are slowly shifting to equip their students with what they need to succeed beyond university and college.
4. Educating others is always part of your job.
It doesn’t matter where you work or what you do - you’re always working with people who don’t know everything you know. You work ties into your teams’. The expertise and knowledge you have can help them do their job better or avoid costly mistakes.
5. Everyone’s come up is different.
I have the privilege of working with so many different entrepreneurs. Every time I sit down with someone I’m blown away by how different their story is from the last one’s. They’ve all had different success, failures, and aspirations. We shouldn’t judge someone because their hustle doesn’t look like ours.
