Part of what I do is outplacing work - helping employees find a new job after company reorganizations and other types of involuntary terminations. It can be a difficult time with lots of ups and downs due to the uncertainty a loss of job can create. While helping people through this process, I've seen people achieve great success (and gain peace of mind) when they do the following things:
1. Develop a short transition statement about your situation to help prepare yourself for conversations about it. Being prepared can make talking about it easier. Eventually, include what you want to do moving forward.
2. Take this opportunity to evaluate what is most important to you in a job and what type of role and company will be the best fit. Making the next decision thoughtfully can prepare you for greater success and satisfaction in your next role.
3. Get a clear picture of your finances from the beginning. Simplify where you can and consider short-term work (if necessary) while you look for a long-term fit. Contract work, individual projects, or ramping up your side business are all good ways to bridge the gap both financially and on your resume.
4. Talk with others about your goals, your ideas, and your next steps. Your friends, mentors, and family can help you with additional ideas, encouragement, and accountability.
5. Set daily job search activity goals generate momentum and a sense of accomplishment as you work towards your larger goal of getting a job.
