5 Things a Classroom of 6-year olds taught me!

Last week I taught my final art class of the term.

Yep. You read that right! I've been standing in for the art tutor at my youngest daughters school for a while, and I have to say - I've thoroughly enjoyed it.

I was never concerned about spending time with a classroom of enthusiastic 6-year-olds. However, I was a little worried about how my love and appreciation for art would come across to them - but, I'm happy to say… they all had a great time!

However - something unexpected happened. I realised, pretty quickly, that there were some serious similarities between teaching kids, and entrepreneurship!

Such as…

1. Flexibility is Key: Working with young minds taught me the importance of adaptability. Just as in entrepreneurship, plans often need to be adjusted on the fly to accommodate unexpected situations. Such as Richard spilling his water, and saying he didn't like watercolours as a result… onto the coloured pencils we went!
2. Creativity Breeds Imagination: Watching these children explore their creativity without inhibition reminded me of the power of imagination. In entrepreneurship, fostering a culture of creativity can lead to innovative solutions and fresh perspectives. I loved seeing their faces light up as they stood back and looked at their creations each week.
3. Patience Pays Off: Teaching art to 6-year-olds requires immense patience. Similarly, building a successful business demands persistence and resilience in the face of challenges. Learning to maintain composure and navigate setbacks with patience is crucial for long-term success as an entrepreneur.
4. Effective Communication is Fundamental: Simplifying instructions and conveying concepts in a way that resonated with young learners highlighted the importance of clear and effective communication. In entrepreneurship, the ability to articulate ideas, engage customers, and inspire action is paramount - it doesn't always come naturally - but, that doesn't mean it's not important.
5. Embrace the Joy of Learning: We had one rule of Art Club… HAVE FUN. Witnessing the joy and enthusiasm these children beamed while creating art reminded me to embrace the journey of learning. In entrepreneurship, maintaining a growth mindset and continuously seeking opportunities for personal and professional development is essential. These children crushed it. They're gonna do fantastic in 'the big world'.

This was a genuinely rewarding experience and one I'd love to recreate again in the future.
