5 Takeaways From #RapertMktg
This Spring semester of 2024, I have had the absolute pleasure of taking Molly Rapert 's Marketing Management course. The semester has been full of great class discussions, guest speakers, and insightful projects. I’m very thankful for Molly and everyone that’s apart of the #rapertmktg family. Not only have I learned so much about marketing, but I have also learned a lot about myself. Below are five takeaways that I consider to be the most important things I learned in this course!
Understand the Importance of Your Purpose
Our first project of the semester, The Values Project, allowed me to deep dive into what my purpose is and how it can guide me in the business world. I now have a clear understanding of what I was created to do which will help me immensely when it comes to looking for a job that matches with my purpose.
Let Your Values Guide You
At one point in the semester, I had the privilege of meeting with Hannah Brunner and working on The Values Project. Hannah helped me discover what my values are, and I learned things about myself that I hadn’t known before. When it comes to everyone’s own personal values, it’s so vital that we understand them and use them to guide our decision making. Everyone is going to have their own set of personal values, and it’s up to us to find ways to line up our values with those of others – inside and outside of the business world.
Pay Attention and Engage
When it came to preparing for in-class discussions, us students would read assigned article(s) and make note of some key takeaways that we received from it, and then come to class ready to share those takeaways. It was amazing and eye-opening to realize that 30 students could read the same article, and yet each student could receive something entirely different. This allowed me to realize that there’s a good chance that the people I will come to work with will have different viewpoints and takeaways than me, and I can learn so much more by attentively listening to different viewpoints.

Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
Our class had the pleasure of having Andy Murray as a guest speaker, and he said something that really stuck out to me - “Do something that scares you. Do what you didn’t dream possible”. This quote is so applicable to marketing and the business world, and fuels me to determine the outcome I want for myself and to really go for it. It can seem so tempting to take the easy routes in life, but the path less traveled tends to be the path that’s most rewarding.
Manage Unstructured Time
In our second Andy Murray day, he spoke to our class about the importance of time management. The best way to manage unstructured time is with 4 quadrants – Scout, Sift, Slay, Serve. The steps go from making mental and physical notes for use later (Scouting), to looking over notes and making connections (Sifting), to producing quality through refining, editing, and revising (Slaying), and finally to putting ideas to the test and helping others solve the problem (Serving).
