“You are officially cancer-free.”
Five years ago, a doctor uttered the words that I had been longing to hear. My battle against Stage 2A aggressive breast cancer included months of chemo, multiple surgeries, and a primal, growing fear about my future, my children’s future, and the future of my company, RedCape . Fortunately, we all survived, and since then, have thrived.
In this post , I wrote about my experience and those who generously came to my rescue.
As Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close, I wanted to reflect on my experience as a cancer survivor. To support those currently fighting the disease and honor those who lost their battle, here are my top 5 takeaways:
#1 Reframe chemo as light
When I told one of my closest friends, Libby Moore , about my diagnosis in 2017, she gave me the most incredible advice. Instead of viewing chemo as poison, think of it as light. If you or a loved one sit in a chemo chair, visualize chemo as light pushing the cancer out.
#2 Watch this 3-minute video
This video from Holley Kitchen without a doubt saved my life even though she lost hers. It helped me make critical decisions about my care early in my battle. Thank you, Holley, and to all the #lifers .

#3 Help with the little things
The number one question I received during my battle was, “What can I do to help?” It’s difficult for those who are in the midst of their treatment to come up with ideas on how to help them. It puts us in a “project manager” role. Looking back, I wished I had help with chores as simple as putting gas in my car, getting the car washed, unloading the dishwasher, mowing the lawn, doing laundry, etc.
#4 Thank a caregiver
We owe a debt of gratitude to those who give time and energy to a battle that isn’t specifically theirs. Both professional and family caregivers can suffer from stress, anxiety and helplessness. Take a moment to send them gratitude and love. I owe so much to my sister, Tracy, and all my friends and family who came to my rescue in 2017. I will never forget your selfless support and care. Thank you!
#5 Spread the word to get screened
Breast cancer is curable—if caught early. Don't miss doctor's appointments and screenings—none of them. Remind everyone in your life: #getscreened .
Lastly, I want to give a huge shout out to the 400+ attendees of the Office Dynamics International Evolving Assistant Conference in Vegas last week. Thank you for holding space for me while I shared my cancer experience on stage. I was incredibly moved by the stories you shared with me later that evening. I invite you to connect me so that we can stay in touch. Thank you for helping me spread the word to #getscreened .
