Security vs. Convenience in Apps - the Swifties “secret sauce” for authentication methods

Have you ever found yourself frustrated when trying to log in to your favorite app, only to be asked to re-enter your password and credentials multiple times - sometimes in endless loops - just to finally get in?

Well, there’s a better way! Meet passkeys - a cool solution for user-friendly authentication that’s here to save you from the headache and potential negative reviews from frustrated users of your app.?

A passkey is a digital credential used for authentication in mobile apps. Based on a cryptographic public-private key pair, they make login easier and more secure:?

  • Registration: When you first register, the key pair is generated and verified through the user’s biometrics (Face ID, Touch ID, etc.). The public key is sent to the server and linked to the mobile app, while the private key is securely stored on your device as a passkey.?

  • Login: Every time you login, the server sends a challenge to the user’s device. Biometrics are used to access the private key which is stored inside the user’s device. The challenge (or request) is signed with the private key and sent back to the server which verifies the authentication request. Importantly, neither your private key nor your biometric data ever leaves your device - they stay secure on your phone or tablet.??

The passkeys are a form of passwordless authentication, replacing traditional passwords and allowing users to login with only their biometrics, and are supported by major tech giants like Apple and Google.?

By replacing passwords with cryptographic keys, and securely storing private keys locally on the device and due to the specific cryptographic challenge-response protocol they employ, passkeys eliminate the risks of password theft and phishing attacks. They are stored securely on the user's device, and authentication happens seamlessly through biometrics or device PINs, making login faster and more convenient. The user experience is smoother, faster and more secure plus there’s no need to remember complex passwords anymore.?

Since we’ve been ISO 27001 certified in the past and continue to align with all security standards, always elevating our and our customer’s security posture, security is a must.? But, if you’re asking the Swifties whether it’s going to be “security or convenience”, we say: “Why not both?”. The Swifties’ “secret sauce" for successful mobile apps is exactly that - a perfect balance of top-tier security with an effortlessly smooth user experience. We believe your apps can (and should) be both secure and convenient.?

Webinar “Promotion of Gender Equity in IT”

Illustration - a woman is working while taking care of her child

The Gender Pay Gap and Gender Equity in IT are topics that continue to make waves -? and for good reason.?

Your Swifties recently had the chance to participate in a webinar organized by NiCAT Cluster (Ni? Cluster of Advanced Technologies from Serbia - SouthEast Europe) and the German Society for International Collaboration ( GIZ Serbia ) with the aim of promoting gender equity in IT.?

It’s the way we got insight into a series of studies revealing key trends in Serbia - trends that closely mirror those across the broader SouthEast European region - specifically regarding female representation in IT.?

The key actions outlined are already having a positive impact on creating fairer and more equitable opportunities for women in the sector. Many of these actions are strongly supported by the Swifties team, including initiatives that promote work-life balance, parental leave, transparency to promotion, pay and reward processes and the use of skill-based assessments in recruitment.?

We believe that it’s important to ensure equal opportunities for women, enabling them to contribute to economic and business progress, and ensuring they have equal access to the benefits of doing business. Yours truly, the COO and Co-Founder of SwiftyLabs and editor of this MobDev Newsletter, Jovana Ne?i? Li?anin (or Jo, as they call me in the US), is passionate and dedicated to this cause, meeting regularly with regional and global women entrepreneurs and collaborating on best practices to make equal pay a reality.

Your Swifties are calling you to think about this - is your business tapping into 100% of the talent pool? Are you creating the right opportunities for everyone to thrive? Let’s work together to build better opportunities - for all - starting now!

Swifties Community - continuous support for the children’s better future

The Swifties at the Book Promotion

Your Swifties are back, bringing more community vibes to share! This November, we had the privilege of supporting our friend and partner, Zoran Spasov Zoff , from North Macedonia (SouthEast Europe) and attending a truly memorable event in Skopje (the capital of North Macedonia). The event marked the publication of his latest book, I Am Sirma, too.

As in previous years, Zoran continues to enrich the literary world. His new novel is a compelling work of fiction that blends historical facts, myths, and fantasy rooted in the rich history of North Macedonia. With a strong female protagonist at its heart, I am Sirma, too challenges conventional historical narratives, reflecting years of research done by the author and based on true events. We were honored to be part of this milestone in Zoran’s literary journey.?

The efforts behind this literary initiative are centred on securing a better future for children, continuing the tradition from past book premieres and sales. All profits from Zoran’s books are donated to support various organizations and institutions that assist children in need. One such initiative includes funding pediatric clinics to create dedicated playrooms, each equipped with its own library for the youngest patients.?

As you might have guessed, even in this digital age, the Swifties love to read books. But what sets us apart is our commitment to building long-term professional relationships and supporting our business partners every step of the way. Best of all, when those efforts align with supporting the community we come from and work with, well, that’s an opportunity the Swifties don’t miss. Do you have an initiative that helps make children' s lives better? Please let us know, and let’s work on featuring it in our next edition!
