New checklist for safer solar roofing work

With the strong growth of the PV market during the last couple of years in Sweden installer safety issues are in the spotlight.

Falling accidents are one of the largest risks in solar installations, but with the right protection they can be avoided. Our new checklist makes it easier to create a safe working environment on roof installations.

Common protective measures, known as collective fall protection, should be used for all rooftop solar installations.

"Falling accidents can have disastrous consequences. Our checklist is easy to use and helps to ensure that the necessary protective measures are in place before the work starts,” says Anna Werner, CEO of Svensk Solenergi.

The checklist in brief:

1. stable scaffolding: scaffolding and guardrails should be correctly erected, free from damage and well anchored according to the manufacturer's instructions.

2. safe access: when installing solar panels, a temporary scaffolding shall be built with stair towers that provide a safe way up to the roof and reduce the risk of falls.

3. seal & net: net and seal should run along the entire platform to prevent people or objects from falling off.

Professional installers can use the checklist as part of the work process to ensure that adequate fall protection is used. The checklist covers the most essential elements of fall protection for small roof works and can be used in the vast majority of cases. However, each installation is unique and may require adaptations.

"We encourage everyone working on roofs to always prioritize safety. We hope that our checklist will become a standard tool for solar installations and other roofing work,” says Anna Werner.

EU Parliament election coming up

We promote #solarenergy at the EU level. On June 9, the Swedish election to the European Parliament will take place.

The #EU makes many decisions regarding solar energy. By being a member of SolarPower Europe, Svensk Solenergi is deeply involved in promoting solar energy at the EU level.

Below, you can read SolarPower Europe's solar manifesto, where we highlight five priorities for the EU's energy agenda over the next five years.

CheckWatt's Battery Reports provides important insights.

The Battery Report

Energy storage is crucial for an electricity system with a high share of wind and solar power.

CheckWatt's Battery Report aims to provide an understanding of why this is the case, how it works, and how more storage can be implemented. The report includes an optimistic forecast of the installations in Sweden, divided in three segments, indicating a growth from 0,44 GW to 2,2 GW battery capacity during this year. It also includes two possible scenarios for the coming years, with the aim of 6,4 GW and 10 GW cumulative installed capacity in 2030.

Why are more batteries needed?

Batteries can facilitate the expansion of renewable electricity and reduce the need for expensive grid reinforcements by utilizing the existing grid more efficiently. Batteries can also significantly increase the reliability of the electricity system by providing the flexibility needed to ensure the balance between electricity production and consumption every hour of the year, and to maintain stability every second.
