5 Super Bowl Ads That Changed the Game Forever
David Brier
$9bn+ in sales. I build brands that customers chase after. If you're done wasting ad dollars, let's talk. Make your brand a magnet, not a money pit.
How Coke, Apple, Budweiser, Tabasco and Old Spice changed our lives (or at least for a Sunday afternoon).
At $5 million a pop for a 30-second commercial, that adds up to $166,000 a second.
Earlier this week, I published an article featuring a fictional company, with a fictional product and even made a fictional TV commercial.
It's a Tough Act to Follow
With all that said, there have been some AMAZING Super Bowl ads over the years. Too many to list here (so don't get all "But what about...?" on me. This is just scratching the surface).
SPOILER ALERT: I didn't include E-Trade babies and Clydesdale ads. I know. Unforgivable. But let's move on.
I wanted to provide a quick view of 5 of my favorites over the 4 decades (OMG, I am feeling OLD!).
5 Favorites That Jumpstarted This Crazy Party
It was 1979 when Coke put out a heartwarming ad featuring Mean Joe Greene, who was known for being the meanest man in football. It was unexpected, heartwarming and talked about for years to come.
Then we come to one of my all-time favorites: Apple's 1984 was an instant classic that took a stand against the big Goliaths of the time. And made a statement none of us has ever forgotten.
Budweiser’s “Frogs” TV ad is one of the most enjoyable simply because it's ridiculous. And one we all tried to imitate after we saw this beer commercial showing NO product and only frogs doing what they do best: amuse.
This is one of my all-time favorites: The 1998 Tabasco ad with the sweaty guy on a porch. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this ad. It made me want to blow up mosquitos.
And NO list would be complete without a mention of Mustafa and Old Spice's "Your Man Could Smell Like This"
Enjoy!
