5 suggestions for improving work-life balance

1. Consider your circumstances. Consider your top priorities in life as well as how you want to spend your time. Once that is established, according to Lambart, you can think of little adjustments you can do that will have a significant overall impact, such as pushing yourself to take a lunch break several times per week to work out or visit with a friend.

2. Control others' expectations. Set boundaries by letting your coworkers and clients know when you'll be working and when you won't so they don't expect you to be available all the time. Also, be truthful about your own needs. Indicate to your employer which routine activities in your personal life are essential, such as putting your kids to bed or practicing yoga—whatever is most important to you.

3.Look after your health. Make sure to include exercise and sleep in your schedule, and remember to treat yourself occasionally as a reward for all of your hard work. According to Lambart, in order to accomplish this, you may need to "delegate where you can, to free up your time for what's most important." If you require additional resources, request them.

4. Develop the ability to refuse. Inform your manager that your workload is too much if you need to work late every day just to get by. In addition, Lambart suggests that you "learn to say no periodically to new projects and extra obligations that will suck up your time and won't contribute to accomplishing your job or personal objectives" if you have a tendency to put other people's needs before your own.

5. Make entertaining plans for your free time. Make plans with your family and friends so that your personal time is productive. Many of us value connecting online at the moment, but make an effort to take some downtime away from it as well. In order to fully focus on the people and activities that are most important to you, Lambart advises turning off electronics for a set amount of time each evening or weekend. Try to adhere to a schedule that allows you to spend time each week on activities unrelated to your job for yourself.

Finding balance can seem difficult. But even in difficult circumstances, by putting these suggestions to use, you can start to find ways to make work feel less overwhelming and free up attention for other aspects of your life.
