5 Strategies to Overcome Imposter Syndrome in Tech

In the fast-paced world of IT, it can feel like the tech is accelerating away quicker than you can understand it. New tech is constantly iterating or abstracting away from core principles making truly understanding how things work extremely difficult.

?

There are a bunch of scenarios like working with someone with deep domain knowledge, moving to a new environment where operating standards are higher, using new tech stacks can all be triggering leading to feelings of self-doubt, failure or worse, disregarding your own accomplishments.

?

Imposter syndrome can and does affect many people, of all levels in tech and can be a constant bugbear for many techies. There are, however, a few effective strategies to combat these negative thoughts and regain confidence in your abilities.

?

1. Acknowledge and Normalize Your Feelings

The first step in overcoming imposter syndrome is to acknowledge and accept your feelings of self-doubt. Understand that imposter syndrome is a common experience shared by many people in the tech industry. By recognizing that these feelings are normal and widespread, you can begin to detach yourself from them and prevent them from consuming your thoughts.

?

Try speaking to your friends and family who work in tech and ask them if they’ve ever felt like this before, what they may have done to deal with these feelings and how it played out for them.

?

You can also combat the negative internal monologue by reframing your thoughts. If you feel like this it’s likely you are out of your comfort zone, which is good, this is a growth opportunity.

?

2. Focus on Your Accomplishments

So, you’ve been building apps, configuring networks, or orchestrating releases now for years, you have many achievements and successes big or small,

?

Relive your achievements with some positive affirmation by creating a portfolio, check your GitHub or read you LinkedIn recommendations (don’t have any? See point number 1 and ask you friends/family to leave you some) showcasing your past projects, completed tasks, positive feedback from colleagues or clients, and any certifications or awards you've received.

?

Reflecting on your accomplishments can help you build confidence and reaffirm your expertise in your field.

?

3. Embrace Continuous Learning

If the earlier stages are about reframing or affirming your expertise, this stage is about taking control. Understand your feelings are because you are outside you comfort zone and recognise this is a learning opportunity and take control of your feelings by seeking out your knowledge gaps and plugging them. There are many many many ways to do this, theoretically or practically.

?

In the rapidly evolving landscape of technology, there will always be something new to learn. Instead of viewing your lack of knowledge. Invest time in ongoing learning and professional development through online courses, workshops, conferences, or mentorship programs. Make a habit of it and build in some regularity to it and it should prepare you for other situations you may find yourself in. ?By continuously expanding your skill set and knowledge base, you'll bolster your confidence and competence as a tech professional.

?

4. Seek Support from Peers and Mentors

Don't forget to reach out to your peers, mentors, or supportive colleagues when you're struggling with feelings of imposter syndrome. Discussing your concerns with others in the tech community can provide valuable perspective and reassurance. Chances are, they've experienced similar feelings themselves and can offer empathy, advice, and encouragement to help you overcome them. Building a strong support network can be instrumental in navigating the challenges of imposter syndrome, and the tech industry as a whole.

?

5. Practice Self-Compassion and Mindfulness

Be kind to yourself and practice self-compassion as you work through your feelings. Instead of dwelling on perceived failures or shortcomings, treat yourself with the same understanding and forgiveness you would extend to a friend facing similar struggles. Incorporate mindfulness techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or journaling into your daily routine to cultivate self-awareness and reduce stress. By prioritizing your mental well-being and practicing self-care, you'll develop resilience in the face of imposter syndrome.

?

Imposter syndrome is a common challenge faced by many techies but please don’t let it consume you. Remember, you are not alone in this journey, and your skills and achievements are valuable to the tech community. Believe in yourself, and trust in your abilities to thrive in your career.
