Despite its simplicity, the search bar is one of the most commonly used features on websites or apps. This emphasizes the importance of the search bar's design and usefulness.
Here are some of the greatest hints for designing it correctly:
1. The Phantom Text
The search bar placeholder text gives the context of what we may seek on a certain website or mobile application.
2. Do not use an excessively tiny text size
The search bar font size should be 16px – iOS browsers will often zoom in on the search bar, hiding the right side.
3. Incorporate the search icon
Icons are often used by designers to graphically explain what a button does. In this example, the magnifying glass symbol serves as a button.
4. Avoid making the search box too short
The search bar should be sufficiently long to accommodate the whole typed word or phrase. On mobile, it should span almost the whole width of the screen.
5. Don't go overboard with your inventiveness
Designers want to be creative, which is OK, but the search bar should be a straightforward space to fill out and search for the term you're looking for.
